i ran my compressor while i was out and it switched off at 175psi as normal, got home about 15minutes later and opened the boot to check the pressure before leaving it for the night, and could hear a leak? its coming from the head on the compressor sounds like the thread part where the tube that screws in that sais (this is not a handle)
is it (a) just a small amount of pressure left in the pipe?
or (b) maybe the check valve leaking?
last night it dropped from 175 to 120 psi could this be why?
not having much luck, first the valves on the psycho,s and now this…
My first compressor was small and sized for a 1-gallon tank. I replaced it with a much bigger compressor that was only $60 so it was tempting:
I found out the hard way that the dang thing uses some non-standard thread pitch on the fittings and it took me a full week and more than a dozen adapters before I found something that made it work. Finally got it hooked up only to find out that it leaked air from the compressor head just as you mention. After some research I determined several things: the compressor did not have a check-valve inline like my old unit did, and the compressor head seals were not meant to contain that type of pressure when not in use. Apparently you can replace the head seals but I was so mad at the cheap piece of foreign crap by then that I returned it and purchased Viair dual 400c compressors. After installing those the difference is like night and day. The Viair units are top quality, they have check valves built in, and they fill the tank super fast.
So I would recommend checking all of your other connections after the compressor for leaks with dish soap and water. If you have leaks then re-attach all fitings using blue Loctite instead of teflon tape. If there are no other leaks it must be your check valve or compressor. Replace the check valve first and if it still leaks then look for a better compressor.
Had a similar experience and came to find out it was actually the check valve that was faulty so i ended up killing the pump due to the fact that I was not really paying it any attention like that. Pump was some viair knock-off but since that i have ordered me a tripple viair 480c setup.
wilee mentioned compressor head leakage and i would really follow what he has there step by step to eliminate your problem. Dont wait till it really breacks down on you, try to resolve it now.
It’s definitely not normal and indeed sounds like your check valve is bad if its coming out of the compressor head. No air should be able to go past where the check valve is installed into your tank. I’ll see what I can do about this and apologize for the inconvenience.
