Hey everyone, well this summer I finally am ready to pull the trigger and get a hornblasters kit! I’m either going to buy local or a new kit if I can negotiate a deal, as I’m a 19year old college student with limited funds. Anyways, I found a kit on craigslist, it’s a Hornblasters Conductors Special Model 240 Train Horn Kit. The seller is asking $550, 50 less than getting it from HB. However it has been opened, and the seller has had it for about a year now. So warranty on the compressor is no longer active I assume, and there would be a year left for the horns (if the warranty is transferable to the next owner??). It was supposedly never installed. Looks clean and the items do not look used. What do you think would be a good offer to make? Any advice for buying off if craigslist?
$50 less than a brand new kit with warranty
Its a no brainer surely
Or you can look at it this way your paying $50 for a years warranty
P.S no idea about craigslist?
Is that the only picture you have? If so, there are extra pieces in this kit that are missing. Fittings, pressure switch, wiring terminals, wiring, solenoid and button. The compressor does look brand new and has the remote mounting kit for the filter along with extra filter elements. The tank looks brand new due to the red port plugs that come from our warehouse still intact. The horns are indestructible so those are probably good as well.
Unfortunately, warranties of the horns are not transferable. They must’ve been purchased through us directly or one of our authorized dealers.
In short, it looks like this is what you have:
1- 2 gallon HornAir Tank- Valued at $49.99 brand new
1- (guessing at the size) 400c Viair compressor- Valued at $191.95 brand new
4- Shocker horns Bells (guessing) #1, #2, #3, #4- Valued at $160.00 (for all four) brand new
1- 5 pack filter elements- Valued at $3.95.
Hope this helps! I would start by asking if he has the rest of the parts. The pressure switch is $68.99 alone. The solenoid is $39.99 alone. You’re still short the fittings, wires and terminals.
Sorry, it would only let me upload one photo from my phone with the original post. If he’s not willing to budge to a decent price I would just get a brand new one… Here’s the thing, I need a kit that I can try to conceal… With the original kit I was looking at: http://www.hornblasters.com/products/details.php?i=shocker-228vx-train-horn-kit. I don’t think I can mount the compressor or tank behind my bumper. Please correct me if I am wrong Angie.
Ah there we go. That looks more like everything you need. It’s actually an older kit. The fittings have changed a little bit and so has the pressure switched but what you have in the pictures will work just as well. That grayish airline does not look familiar. The other airline I’m guessing is the 1/2" airline. Is there 5/16th airline as well?
Well looks like everything is there that you need, maybe just some wire yet and it’s good to go. As far as mounting everything, the tank and compressor will be fine behind the bumper, as long as there is decent air flow for the compressor and remember it is best to mount the compressor just like its sitting in the pics, that way it dissipates the heat as designed.
Well the seller won’t budge below $500. I explained the whole warranty issue and told him I would pass for now but he could contact me if he changed his mind. I’m hoping something will happen, if not I will go for a 228 classic shocker kit.
IMHO, I would offer him between $500-$520. If he does not want to sell it that low , Buy new. You would be loosing the warranty for both the compressor and horns which would be a huge problem if the brushes would go out early or check valve sticks / etc. etc.
The 228VX comes with the viair 20005 mounted tank and compressor. This 280C is NOT a completely sealed unit and is suggested to be mounted in a toolbox or under a toneau cover. The plus to this system is the whole 20005 unit (tank, compressor, pressure switch, check valve, leader hose and tank fittings) are included in the 1 year Viair manufacture warranty.
Is there any need to test the unit before buying? The seller claims he doesn’t want to tear everything apart and that tubing has to be cut and stuff since its brand new…
