db's

how many decibles does the k5 put out at 150 psi and 200 psi? debating on getting a 200 psi comp. kit.

about 156db

There’s alot of factors here to consider that you didn’t ask. Most of the time, Windham Machine does their tests at 100 feet and low pressure (which is what they recommend). A K5LA at 100 feet and 75 PSI is around 113 dB. You’d have to find somebody with a reliable, good dB meter to measure the sound output at the two different pressures. I’m not convinced that a K horn is any louder at 50 PSI higher. I think it just changes the tone for the worst making people think that it’s louder but I’m not sure without anyone doing accurate testing.

I HAVE A DB meter and will be hopefully gettin all horns tested to see what db they produce

Dude I would love that!

be sure to measure the distance from the horns to the meter. I’m pretty sure that matters.

You’re right, it does matter. I recommend using one of those surveyer wheels so you’ll know exactly how far you are. 100 feet might not be a good distance for a cheaper meter, 40-50 feet will probably work fine. Make sure to stay the same distance apart for both tests.

this is no cheap meter… my meter is 600

Thanks guys for your help. Was just wondering b/c a buddy got some klienn horns and he says they are the loudest but my k5’s do sound louder and better and just more intense.

LOL! Don’t let that dude lie to you like that. If they were louder, why don’t any trains have them? Why are they like 700 dollars cheaper? Why don’t they even weigh half of what a K5 weighs. Trust me, your K5 is WAY louder, no comparison.

yeah. he says they are like 185 dbs, the highest db on the market, so they are louder. will have to blast him now that the debris covers are off…see what he says then!!!

lol 185 dB… a Leslie RS-5-T is only 145 dB at 100 feet and it’s louder than a K3 or K5.

post up a video of his face when you do.

ok. will see if i can get a shot of him mid blast.

lol.

and interesting:

Decibel Level Chart by William Hamby
(Take with a grain of salt though; a lot of its theoretical based on pressure equations.)

185.75 is the amount of pressure 3/8 lb of TNT puts out along with almost creating an earthquake.

Well, we did a side by side comparison today, klienn vs the almighty K5. I did not get a pic of his face when I blasted mine but I think he might have peed alittle. It was great. He is a believer now.

145! db at 100 feet for the leslie?
omg that has to be insane then isnt the k3 /k5 like 115 at 100 feet
holy crap so the leslie is way louder then? i thought it was a little bit louder

Now I want one of them RS5T although I am saving for a Kahlenberg or any of those low tone ships horn.

there is a differenze between the loudness and the sound intensity - called dbc and dba in germany. the first is the loudness you apprehend, the other one is the “real” loudness, which is shown on the db-meter on dba. some frequenzes you hear louder at the same sound intensity… so you have to decide, which value you speaking of. hope, you understand my genglish (german-english)

Trust me, they are loud!
