That sounds typical. Most of my tow truck customers are diesel with dual batteries and they have other electrical draws like the light bar, the lift, and winch. They must put higher output alternators in those trucks.
Dan,
You’re 100% correct.
Most of the Big 3 have an “EMS package” for the trucks and vans that include either a second alternator or a higher output single alternator. These are for police cruisers, tow trucks, fire/rescue vehicles, ambulances. and similar vehicles put into public service.
I called my dealer to get a quote and needless to say I was    when he told me the price for parts, labor, and the PCM/ECM reprogramming for it.
I’m still going to do the swap to Group 31 batteries (true industrial rating that are slightly larger) because it’s my rig for towing the toyhauler and it’ll be nice to have, but man I can’t see getting that monster alternator … not at their goofy price anyways.
So I have been looking at compressors for a long time now and am really intrigued by a mechanical compressor. Kilby has some great stuff but the kit price is $1500 for a Dodge 5.9. While that is not the end of the world, I’m always ready for a deal.
I can get the York 210 compressor with a clutch brand new for $250. I can fab a bracket if necessary, but I would seriously consider getting the components from Kilby. I’d get the compressor there but he gets well over $500 for the same unit.
I need to ask Brad if the mounting kit comes with the two belt pulley adapter for the alternator. He is closed today or I’d call him. His kit has a 2 1/2 gallon tank and I’d like at least 5 gallons, another reason to not get the kit.
I never dreamed this horn stuff would end up being so expensive.
Brad Kilby sold Kilby Enterprises so he’s no longer there. The new owner kept the name.
Oops, okay, then maybe that’s why prices are higher than they were about two years ago.
Yeah, and no real updates to their product line either, which is why I was sad to see Brad sell off the company … but it was good for him personally because of the economy and he’s got a lot less stress now.
