Engine driven compressors: redux

I figured I would share this since I’ve been on the lookout for an EDC for my truck, and Kilby Enterprises closed its doors late last year due to the downturn in the economy.

I’ve been on hunt for an EDC for the new Cummins 6.7L engine since I’ve got one, but the nice part is this isn’t just for that engine … it’ll work in Ford and Chevy trucks as well.

Extreme Outback in Vacaville, CA, is marketing a modified Sanden A/C compressor with all the parts needed to make it a bolt in install. Looks like I’ll be buying one in May so I can install it this summer while home on vacation and upgrade to a 12 gallon tank (or bigger).

I should have a write up about it in late July or early August.

how much?

Oo I want one

I thought long and hard about this but decided against it. Check it out

$415
8cfm @100psi

8CFM @ 100psi is the same as the Oasis, and their kit includes everything to make it a bolt-in install; bracket, mounting hardware, leader hose, and even the filter and serpentine belt. No special mounting, deep cycle battery, higher output alternator, or 2/0 wire to tie it all into a stock electrical system.

This kit is also a couple hundred bucks cheaper than the XD3000, and even more so when you consider you don’t need the 2/0 wire for power, the extra battery, a battery tray, other small parts, and your own time to fab up the install.

We’ll see how it goes this summer. I’m ordering one up to do the install while I’m home.

I am currently doing an EDC setup in my Ram 1500. I am using a York 210. Have you ever thought of trying one of those?

I’ve already looked at the York 210 and it won’t work.

Kilby Enterprises makes one for the 3rd gen Dodge diesels ('03 to '06) but because of the larger intake tubes for the intercooler, emissions junk, and not having the clearance to mount the York properly … it’s a no go, even if I could fab up a mount for it.

Yeah, that’s not bad for an EDC “IF” you have the room and/or extra pulley and/or the right length of serpentine belt for where you have it mounted.

Good luck and let us know how it goes! Post pics!

Would be nice to have but how long do they last?

Who knows…but i do know they come with a 2yr warranty.

Delete your emissions junk

Brother I would in a heartbeat if I didn’t have less than 12,000 miles on my truck, plus with it being an '08 I’m holding off until that emissions junk breaks so the dealer fixes it under warranty.

I’ve got the Smarty Jr and delete pipe sitting on a shelf waiting for that day to come.

I’ve had a Smarty jr on my truck since it had about 8,000 miles on it. They say it’s undetectable when removed. I didn’t care because the Smarty is so sweet! Couldn’t live without it. The truck is so different with it on! Now I have 120,000 miles and never a hickup!

The extreme outback compressor is $800 for the complete kit?

Whoa! The mounting kit is $800, then you add the compressor…

Yeah, but considering the Oasis is a few bucks more before you add the second (or in our case third) battery, some 2/0 cable for power, and get a battery box … you’re about $400 bucks cheaper.

As for the Smarty Jr, it is detectable on the '07.5 and newer trucks with the Cummins 6.7L engine. The J35 recall is what nails it.

I see about the Smarty… I have the 5.9 Cummins. Mine is right at the cut-off when I could have had either one, but I went with the older trusty 5.9.

Do the diesels need another battery too? Even with those two big batteries?

Yeah it does, and a new high-output alternator, due to the amount of power it pulls.

The alternator on our trucks is rated to around 165 amps and the Oasis pulls a max of 180, so it will really tax the charging system … and with all the electronics running the engine and transmission on the 3rd gens, I don’t want to mess up my truck.

And I’ve got a 5.9, too … the wife’s '06. She’s getting my K3LA after I swap it for the K5LL that I want on my truck.

Here we go again…LOL

You may not have to add batteries if you have deep cycle ones. The overall current draw of any 12Vdc air compressor is the same, ours just does it faster. Ours has 5 times the life expectancy and delivers about 5 times the performance giving you 25 times the amount of work than many of the other 12Vdc air compressors.

Dan,

The Group 65 batteries (basically heavy duty car batteries) that come in these trucks won’t handle it as well as the deep cycle batteries can, and in cold weather its even worse because simply starting the engine can put quite a bit of stress on them. Then the grid heater (or glow plugs, depending on the engine) will cycle to help keep the engine running smooth during the first few minutes of running and I can watch the alternator gauge dip below 12 volts several times until it warms up.

I really hate the fact that they put a standard battery in a vehicle with a medium duty rated engine, but I guess they have to cut corners somewhere.
