Fast Fittings

Hi all,
Once again, please forgive my bad english, i’m doing my best !
After having finished my first homemade horn kit, i plan to build a bigger one.
For convenience, I would like to use fast fittings, like this one : http://i00.i.aliimg.com/img/pb/883/519/629/629519883_775.jpg
But, i was asking myself if it will slow down the air flow ?
Could you give me one good advice ?

The smallest inside diameter of any airway will have the most affect on airflow and that could be the horn ports. The inside diameter of 1/2" DOT airbrake tubing is about 3/8" and the tube fittings have a 3/8" NPT port.

Then, i won’t use fast fittings.
I’ve another question for you : where should i put the solenoid valve ?
Just after the tank, or at the same place than the horns ?
See the very precise schematic below (---- is tubing, which could be 5 or 6 feet long) :

On my first projet i put the valve in the (1) position but i prefer to ask !

Put your solenoid closest to the horns. That way you will get nice short sharp bursts. If your valve is a long way back you can get some delay or trailing off on the sound.

And, another question : is it useful to have the tubing in 3/4" or 1" between the tank and the solenoid valve, if the tubing from this valve to the horn is only 1/2" ?

1/2" tubing all the way will be fine unless you’re running a lot of line, which in your case it doesn’t sound like it. You can keep your hose size matched to the size of your tank outlets. No sense spending your money putting in a giant air line if you have a tank with small outlets restricting the flow.

What type of horns are you using anyway?

For the moment, i have rather small horns.
It’s very difficult to find cheap and big ones here, in France.
I’m building my own tank, so i can put whatever diameter on it.
In fact, there’s a schematic :

TANK -------- MANIFOLD -------------- VALVE – HORNS

On the manifold, there are :

  • a pressure gauge,
  • a pressure switch (150-180 PSI)
  • a blow off valve (200+ PSI)
  • an input line from the 12V compressor
  • an output free line for using compressed air for inflating tires or whatever.

Tubing between tank and manifold will be as short as possible.
On my previous air system, i soldered the manifold to the tank.

I agree with what has been said. For 5-6 feet I wouldn’t sweat the airline size unless you’re going with a bigger horn. Also, they do make large diameter quick disconnect fittings if you’re interested.
