Faulty horn

Hi guys.

I’ve been to our railroads and i’ve been given 2 horns.
They’re pretty small compared to big K3s…

Here’s one of them i painted flat black:

I opened it and cleaned the diaphragm (i made it blink :D)

then i reassembled the whole horn and tested it.

The horn should sound like this:

Actually tho this horn only makes a sad whistle… very high pitch.
If i put my hand on the flare i can feel a big flux of air… as if space between the diaphragm and the neck of the horn was too much…

Do you think i have to replace the diaphragm or there might be something else?

Problem is that i don’t know makes those horns and i haven’t found yet someone in my country who makes new diaphragms… i don’t even know the specifications in order to make new diaphragms… need help here :o

Thanks in advance

I’m fairly certain that the horn you have there is a Cunningham Air Whistle. If not, it’s an exact copy of one lol. Here’s a link to their site, maybe they can help you out…

I am not familiar with this particular horn but it looks like you can adjust the Diaphragm pre-load but loosening the large nut and turning the bell in or out as needed.
If the bell does thread in and out try turning it in while you are running air through the horn.

I think it’s a clone (or a foreign twin :D). I wasted a whole month trying to find any info about that horn but couldn’t find any tip… not even railroad enthusiasts know anything about it.

The word embossed twice on that horn is “SAL”. But i would bet everything i have that it is made in Europe.

BTW

Mine should sound with a little lower pitch than 1H on cunningham site and a little higher than 2H.

I’ll drop them an email and see if they can help me somehow.

Mmm i have not tried yet. I’ll try tomorrow.
Previous paint which covers any surface makes me things harder than normal. Then oxide makes all pieces all one big block of… aluminium (i think).
This horn should be at least 15 years old!

I wish i could show you how this horn sounds like… i couldn’t make a video today.

Thank you for your answers for the moment!

Try asking on hornandwhistleboard.com

Seems like link is dead

Alright, i’ll post the same thread there and see what comes out but i think Pete is right.
Today i removed the bell from the bottom of the horn and i can tune it. I have to try on the good horn.

Hi all,
been kinda busy lately.
I contacted ppl on the other board but nothing has been solved yet… but… i replaced the bell with the one from the other horn and i got the sound… the thing is that the sound is not clear and is not loud.
A friend told me that it’s just because i’m using one of those guns to inflate tires so air is leaking on the inlet hole… i think so for loudness but not sure about the dirty sound.
By the way here’s a short video:

P.S. Anyone willing to explain me how to embed youtube videos on this board? :stuck_out_tongue:

Looks to be a Cunningham horn or a Ibuki also a company called Federal air sirens made horns like that too.

I found out a lot of companies used the same design.
This one is made by SAL, another brand used by our railroad is Sonabel. Both should be french…
