Finally found a shop with a good dB meter, predictions?

I am going sometime between this afternoon and next week, to measure the output of my horns. Wanted to toss this thread up for entertainment, to see if anyone can guess the sound level. I added a poll obviously, but feel free to comment with specific guesses.

Let me state that I have already found an analog meter, that my local LEO carries…and we calibrated it before attempting. It only goes to 130dB, and I spiked it instantly. Just to give you a range.

Nathan P3’s
150psi max
1/2" SMC nickle plated valve

Any takers?

I’ll bite, but if you pegged it instantly, how will you know how much above 130 it is?

So maybe 100 ft directly behind your truck in an open parking lot. Downwind. Mic aimed at truck. Must be a Walmart parking lot. LOL

127db since you have 127 posts.

Are you using a termlab? and how far away will the meter be? either way i say close to bottom 150s

The meter I used from the police dept only went to 130dB on the scale. Sorry, I should have clarified. It instantly maxed the needle out over 130dB, and stayed there for 3-4 seconds. I have am confident they will peak 150dB, or come really close. Since this shop with new meter I have found is high end, I know it will go much higher than 130dB.

Not sure, but I will have pics at least…hopefully video too. I am going to do this at a high end stereo shop, so I am going to let them test them as if it was a stereo. When I told them what I wanted to test, it seemed to peak some interest with the staff. I’ll probably end up getting the measurement for free, just because its something different from the norm for them.

Ahh that makes more sense. If you take a reading while in their shop it should be much higher than I stated. Can you get outside at least?

I voted 141-145 because I assumed you would be recording this from 1 meter.

I’ll do whatever they suggest, but I definitely assume it will be outside.

Not quite sure of the distance, I will report back with exactly how it went down.

The factory standard for train horns is 1 meter and 100 feet and for civil defense sirens it is 100 feet.

termlab results?

Hopefully within a week or two. I was ready to set up an appointment not long after this thread was made, and I put a connecting rod through the side of my block (see latest thread started by me  ).

I’m back on the road now, once I get a few things straightened out I will get it done and report back with some data.

Sure sure the ol’ rod through the block excuse!
Glad you’re back on the road.

Jb weld!
