Horn problem. Urgent Help needed!!

Hey there, first time poster on this forum, even though I have lurked for quite some time now.

I also apologize if this isn’t the proper section for this type of post.

We have a horn installed in our arena for the hockey games that I announce/DJ for. I cannot tell you exactly what kind of horn it is. What I can tell you is that we have it mounted up above the zamboni entrance, and we use the arena air compressor tank. The horn needs a battery device in order for it to work, and we have so that the wires off the solenoid are connected to wires that run to our sound booth, where we use a door bell to sound off the horn.

The last game I was unable to use the horn, before hooking up my 12 volt battery charger, which is what I use an an electrical device to the horn, I connected the hose coming from the horn to the air tank, and without warning the horn started sounded off on it’s own at a steady pace.

Any idea as to what the problem is and what I can do to fix it?

sounds like maybe bad switch or solenoid

yea it sounds like the valve got stuck open

Is there a way to correct to this without replacing the solenoid?

take it apart and clean it…

Do you mean to remove the solenoid and clean inside? OR to remove the hose and clean in there? What kind of products do you recommend? WD40 maybe?

Sorry for asking so many questions.

The horn worked fine on Saturday during a game, but we didn’t unhook it and on Tuesday during a practice it started to sound off on it’s own without warning I was told LOL. Scared the crap out of everyone I was told.

Sounds like the diaphragm inside the solenoid delevolped a small pinhole possibly from debris… This happened to me twice a couple years ago…

As soon as there is a pinhole. backpressure lets go in the valve and it opens from the pressure.

If this is the case you need a new diaphragm, and depending on what type of valve it is and quality it may be impossible to find / or cheaper to buy a new solenoid…

If you can get us a picture of the valve i can help you more but without knowing the type, it would only be guesses.

I’ll try to head down to the rink tonight or tomorrow afternoon and take pictures of the horn. I do have an extra solenoid here at home.

if u have an extra one just hook it up and see if it fixes the problem…

Alright, I’ll try that. Hopefully the solenoid on the horn right now isn’t too difficult to remove.

I’ll likely have to get new hose fitting though as the solenoid I have at home is different.

Well I won’t need to post any pics.

To update I got the horn working. Didn’t even have to remove the solenoid as something was likely clogged. Connected my 12 volt battery charager to the horn button i use, and before hooking up the air tank to the horn, pressed the button a few times to hear “clicking” sounds, turned the air tank on to a much higher psi level, to “blow out” any dirty or debris that might have been inside, and then connected the hose and to my delight it wasn’t going off on it’s own. Brought it back down to the PSI level I use in game, and it worked fine. And it worked fine during our game tonight with no issues.

should protect ur valve so something doesnt clog it again
