OK, so after posting I checked the fuse to one of hte cigarette lighters and found it blew. (It was 15 amp.)
So I put in a new 20 Amp fuse and it blew maybe 30 sec later. I had another 20 amp lying around and I actually got the compressor to stay on long enough to fill the 5 gal. tank.
Then I went over to the local mall and popped my cherry! Horns sound awesome!
Blew them until the tank ran empty. THen the fuse blew again.
So how large a fuse do I need? Is this a common issue?
Are you sure the blue wire is the trigger wire? Is it labeled? I haven’t used that pressure switch - and the diagram you posted doesn’t have a blue wire.
Anyway, the trigger wire draws very little current. Probably less than an amp to trip the relay. Something must be wrong and I wouldn’t just throw bigger fuses into the factory fuse panel. You can overheat the wiring.
OK, think I got it figured out. I was just test touching the igniton wire to the inside of the cigarette lighter. Not to its positive. Just wired it in and it filled.
Will do a test run once the sun goes down and will take pics
Anddddddddddd???.. Is it still working? If it is and you wired the blue wire to the inside of the cigarette lighter (Neg) then it means…(Pete scratches head??)… I’m proper confused!! When you now turn off the ignition, does the pump not run anymore? Is it possible your cigarette lighter is either positive earth or wired wrong?
I think sticking a bare wire into the cig lighter probably touched the positive AND negative - blowing the fuse. Now that it’s wired in solid, it has no chance to arc across.
So diesel - the cig lighter only has power when the ignition is on?
Well, I think ear 2 ear nailed it. I hit both. So I took it apart ( I dont smoke anyway) and twisted the pos cig wire to the blue and we’re golden.
So just to clarify, I was making stupid mistakes as I was in the “wanna git er done” mode. It works right, only runs when ignition is turned on. But I will not hardwire it and will twist the wires together only when I drive since this is a car wifey and I share and she doesnt know/want to touch the thing!
Spent the evening testing it with my brother, it was insane. We even warned his girlfriend to be on the lookout . Blasted a block away, then drove in front of her open window, the shock on her face was priceless. We had to pull over we were laughing so hard!!
Ok, so here is the rookie dumbass mistake. I did a very crude install so that I can easily install and remove the horns. In my haste, the air line from the tank to valve touched the compressor…long enough for it to melt and create a tiny hole.
So no airline now… Gonna go get a new one later in the week. But do I even bother trying to fix the airline? Eletrical and duct tape and clamps? Anything until I buy a new one?
If you had a union fitting, you could cut the airline & remove the pinhole - then put the fitting inline. I dunno what would hold and not leak by taping/clamping.
