I found this Youtube clip, and if you play the video at 1:32 this sounds undoubtedly like a Shocker. What are your thoughts?

The Hornblasters Shockers are just re-branded Bu-ell horns (remove the hyphen, the actual brand name is censored here for whatever reason). Bu-ell makes actual train horns, including 5 chime versions which play the same chord as the Shockers but with an additional A4 on the high-end. This is the 4-note train horn which blows the same chord as the Shockers.
Hornblasters, just remove that censor here. It’s not gonna take away business if people know who actually manufactures the horns. Bu-ell doesn’t have your warranty or kit offerings and the vast majority of people who buy Shockers don’t go on this forum anyways.
Ah, cool! Did not know that. Who manufactures their Outlaw line?
There is also a Federal 3 chime horn which sounds like the Shockers:
That horn doesn’t blow any of the same notes.
I did not say that, I said it sounds like Shockers, just a little lower(when you blow them at a low pressure)
I wonder where they have them mounted on this locomotive. I don’t see them in any of the typical places (cab roof, on the long hood etc)
I am curious how the Life Guard yacht horns are mounted. In one view I can just see what appears to be a horn on the cab. You could not mount these amidships, because they are made of plastic and would melt.
Hey guys, please get over the censorship and allow the name of the company who makes these!!!
Uell makes locomotive horns, but these are in no way related to the plastic Life Guard line (Sold as “Shocker” by HB) Uell’s train horns are brass Strombos horns, these blow a beautiful A major 6th root position chord. We tried to make these 1st inversion, but the shape of the Conn brass musical instrument bell did not allow it to be shortened enough to blow an octaving concert-C#. In 1950 Uell tried to make locie horns, but they had a high bracket that arranged the bells in a circle. Some did sell, I have a photo of one with reversed bells atop a Santa Fe E6A (!!!) and another showed up on eBay last year. These are as rare as hen’s teeth. In 1985 we discovered three left over train horn brackets on the company’s stock shelves, I had the late Gary Uell make a custom 5-chime that blows a beautiful 1st inversion 6th position chord, Key of A below middle-C, like playing a K5LA recording on low speed. I had him chrome the entire thing and I still have it today and is considered by us collectors to be the most beautiful sounding air horn of all, with a timbre like a chorus of human voices.
Hi,
Here is the photo I wanted to post. It is the rear view of my 1951/1985 5-chime Strombos locomotive horn, note the 4-bolt standard locomotive base on the bracket. Size is 373 x 280 pixels.
The horn laying next to it is a 1930’s original pre-***** Strombos yacht horn. Like the locomotive horn it is all brass, right down to the fasteners and piping. The power chambers are much larger. Tags says “Most Powerful Of All Signals”. Kinda cool to me, and the horn blows a pleasant minor triad. The 5-chime has a most wonderful sound, quite unlike the new locomotive horn made by *****. I attached a short .wav recording we made of it right after it arrived in spring of 1985, and it is late night, the horn is about 1/2 mile away with long echoes, it sounds rather like a human chorus.
Good deal man! If you are ever in TN bring that 5 chime bull down to TCRM or SARM, we would love to hear it in person! And yeah, I am curious as to where they are mounted myself. Maybe above the coupler?
351WF250, I have been to Oak Ridge a few times, but I never brought the Strombos horn with me.
I really like the sound of the black plastic Life Guard horns. I had asked Gary about making either a fifth short trumpet to octave the lowest trumpet, or to make a long trumpet to sequence the lowest trumpet on the set by a minor third. My fingers are crossed. I love the minor chord of the Lifeguard (Shocker) horn set. I would buy one when made a 5-chime.
This has happened before on here … can’t remember what the fix was though
Best work around is to use a free image hosting service (imgur, photobucket etc) and then just use the link to post the image.
If you want to, Email the pics to me & I will edit your post and pop them in for you:D hornstaruk@gmail.com
Hi, Pete, email with photo and recording sent! Thanks!
Actually bu.ell sells their standalone kit cheaper (despite providing slightly different fittings and stuff). It should be a requirement for anyone buying hornblaster grade horns to have to register with this forum and to post a video or two, some might argue- why have them otherwise?
