ok so i just installed a set of air horns on my blazer and they are in front of the radiator facing down. the problem is when i am driving and i honk the horn it doesn’t work properly or at all if im going over 65mph. would facing them backwards fix the problem.(i am 99% sure its because they are facing foward but i want to make sure. also im a noob.)
are they facing down or forward?
It really dont matter tho because they should be working either way… maybe its so windy , the wind noise makes them tougher to hear???
they are facing down, but i was going about 80 and when i tested to see if they worked all i could hear was the air leaving the tank, maybe my air pressure is too low. its at 140psi with a 20gal. tank.
also when im going 30-50 only 1 horn sounds, the one that doesn’t sound is level with my bumper so i think the wind is going in the horn and they dont work.
i figure ill just move them to the back and facing backwars but i wanted to make sure the horns aren’t messed up.
also these are some what old horns that i got out of my dads truck, he never installed then and they were sitting in his truck for 6 months after a friend gave them to him, so could it be that they are dirty and thats causing the problems.
I’d be willing to bet they need to be rebuilt. Even at high speed they should still work. I put a set of Hadley dual trumpet horns on my girlfriends truck that are in the grill facing down and they work great.
ok after doing some research it turns out i have hadley h00640r horns, i saw in a description that they are under the hood horns only do you think that might have some thing to do with it.
if not how do i rebuild them.
My Hadley horns have 4 or 6 screws on the back of the horn. Take the back off and take out the thin metal sheet on there. Be careful with the gasket. Take it to a hardware store and find something close to the thickness. Cut it to the same size with tin snips and replace the stock one (or two). Or you could contact Hadley and see if they have a rebuild kit for your horns also.
ok thanks, does it have to be a certain type of metal or could alu. flashing work.
mine’s facing forward and I run only 125psi and they still work at highway speeds.
alu flashing is too soft. you need brass foil which is about as thick as bond paper
You got it.
well, i just got threw cleaning the horn and it looks as if some one had ben using it for 10yrs and never cleaned it, but with some gun scrubber and high grit sand paper they look almost new. before i cleaned it i tried to power the horn using my breath but only 1 horn would sound and it was very weak, but after i cleaned it both horns sound and are quite a bit louder than before. now i just have to see if they work tomorrow when i run 130psi threw them.
if they still dont work i’ll buy the brass foil.
