Hybrids are too quiet!

Congress wants to pass a law to require that hybrids make noise when they’re traveling slowly (for safety). Perhaps Hornblasters has a product to help with that!

The measure supposedly protects the blind, who depend on traffic noise for judging whether a street is dangerous.

wow that sounds bad, lets play a V8 SOUND YEAA

Welcome, SpareSimian.

I can see where the hybrid could be a problem for the blind so I think it should make some kind of noise.

ALL cars should have a V8 sound!

I want a ****ing jet fighter sound. Nothing like 500mph sound @ 5mph

I’ll stick with the rattle from my oil burner. Diesel is technically a waste product of refining so I’m doing them a favor by owning a vehicle that burns it.

Besides, I can’t see buying a hybrid with some of the prices I’ve seen … that new Chevy is slick, but I don’t see $44,000.

Kris

Sorry, I would rather have no sound than a diesel.
Makes the world go 'round I guess…

It’s all about choice man. This is what I like, I know the pro’s and con’s of diesel and I don’t mind educating folks on them, or having a well mannered debate on them. Everyone remembers the Olds 350 diesels from the late 70’s and early 80’s when you say “diesel” and its not like that anymore, unless you have some moron turning up his rail pressure to make smoke.

Those are the guys I love to beat on.

Kris

Yeah, I’m with ya - to each his own…

I just hate the smell of the fumes. Can’t stand being next to one in a drive-through. That’s a double whamee.

There are definitely some badazz rigs out there though.

The only time you should smell it is if someone’s turned up their power, but its the jag-offs that run their power adders on all the time and think smoke is cool that bug the heck out of me … and I’m a diesel advocate.

I don’t smell fumes with my '08 but its got all the emissions stuff still on it, and I’ve never noticed it with the wife’s '06. If I could swing it, I’d take her '06 away from her and get one of the new BMW 335i diesel cars … 32 to 37 MPG on the highway.

Kris

And I acknowledge that gas burners put off fumes too. They may even be worse to breathe (IDK) but it’s outta sight outta mind… Sometimes I actually hold my breath when behind a diesel. lol Nothing that burns your nose can be too good for you.

The rattle box sound just sounds like something is wrong. Like a thrown rod all the time. I know it’s just the high compression, but having to shut the thing off in a drive-through would get old. To me it’s just constant nails on a chalkboard.

Again, they certainly have their place. These are just personal opinions & I respect yours.

Most of the emissions from diesels are heavier than air, so over time they will actually settle to the ground, whereas with a gas engine they are lighter than air and one of the reasons why we have smog.

And no, if you’re smelling them that strong, its definately not good for you.

Likewise my friend.

So does anyone make a good source of “artificial engine noise” to install on one’s ultra-quiet hybrid? Or should one install a conventional sound system in the front wheel wells and a cheap audio source to drive it? I suppose this time of year we could play an MP3 of sleigh bells through it.

I know Lotus has one for their hybrid/EV, but I’ve not heard of an aftermarket source for something like this. You could probably do it for cheap with a small loudspeaker and an MP3 of Crazy Frog … if that don’t keep folks from being speed bumps they don’t need to be out in public.
