Install questions and Price

Hey guys new to the forum but had a few quick questions i have found a set of K5LA horns for 500 (but no manifold and look a bit rough said to be in working order is this a good deal? also im looking for the install ideas for such horns on a 2006 Chevy ext cab silverado 1500 2wd it may not be possible im not sure but im not lookin to pu anything in the bed and i like having my spare tire any other options for the horn mounting and compressor and air tank?

i might haggle them some on that price without the manifold and without the manifold they can me mounted separately just about anywhere on individual brackets. i just purchased a great looking set with manifold for 605 shipped. they will be here tomorrow and i will see how they sound in person. hope this helps, and i am putting my whole setup in my toolbox with horns mounted upside down under the toolbox out of sight as much as possible

well here are the pics of the horns trying to be sold said that he had all the brass fittings for them so i assume someone tapped them out already but im not sure about anything i dont know enough to make an offer or know what these are worth any help on that guys?

also i like your ideas on how your going to mount things i may look into getting a box as well to mount things into i see lots of clean installs on here like that

Welcome to the forums. I like the truck toolbox installs too.

If I was dropping 5 hundo on some horns I would want to know exactly if/how they are modified. Some would say they are worth less if modified. Some would say if it’s what you want it’s fine. Neither is wrong IMO.

But yeah, if you’re not going to use a manifold anyway, why pay for one…

i plan on meeting with the guy today he is local in my area so im going to have to look at them but like i said im new to all of this im not sure whats good or bad besides how they look as far as the manifold goes if i was able to get my hands on one and it would mount on my truck with minimal mods then i would rather use that because i have herd running diff lengths of air hose will sound funny to individual horns

also this is quoted on the horn sale posting "every horn is drilled and tapped i have all the brass fitting that fit for each horn " so now i know that they have been drillled and tapped can anyone give me an idea on what i should offer for these horns knowing they have been modded? and also the condition they look like?

I would stay away from any nathan that has been “drilled and tapped”

any certain reason for this? or any thing i should be looking for if i look at these items?

The orifice that the air enters from the manifold is a specific size - like 4mm if I recall. Some people like to drill that out to make them louder - 6mm i think, while others others wouldn’t dream of ever modding a horn unless maybe having it tuned.

So what you’re really going to have to look at is - how deep did they drill the pilot hole for the tap. If the tap pilot goes all the way to the intersecting hole inside the horn I would pass. If there is still some depth left of the correct orifice diameter then that part is probably ok. Inspect the threads on each bell. Depending on the age of the horn, there should be an o-ring groove around each orifice. Make sure it isn’t damaged if you ever want to seal each bell to a manifold. (o-rings are easier than the old gaskets)

The only reason to consider buying these horns is that you can see them in person. Otherwise no way. Just make sure to scrutenize each horn.

Around 500 prob isn’t too bad, but you can call the mods a defect/disadvantage for negotiating purposes. It doesn’t really matter how dirty they are you can strip them & paint. However it would be nice to hear them or see the internals…

Good luck

thanks for the quick reply i will be meeting the guy to see the horns in person i will take pics of them and post them on here soon as i have met wih the guy and get other opinions from you guys who have much more experience with these and will know more of what to look for

i would offer 300… its been messed with. i dont have a manifold and u cant even test the horns until u get a manifold… thats a huge risk… plus people have bought complete kits online for right 600…
just make an offer ur comfortable paying.

well the guys said he got them without the manifold that being the reason he tapped them out and added brass fittings on them

i did for 605, they will be in wed. just gotta make people offers and have the money in hand or in paypal ready to go, i have an on going thread already i am going to post some pics in and a sound clip in when they come in tomorrow. oh and that was 605 shipped.

here is a pic i just took of how the horn was tapped what do yall think? this is how it was done on all 5. also i opened them checked the diaphragms and they are all still really good all horns in good shape just needs paint striped from the outside thats it

where u able to test them out?? i never dealt with horns like that… but it does take alot of value out from them…
if u happy with them then buy em…

yes tested all and all seemed to work fine just curious bout payin 500 for somethin thats been modified

there is a set with a manifold on ebay about to end in a few hours and the bid is at 480, looks like a nice set, may want to check it out

If everything seems good with the horns, it’s just going to be up to you. Like Scaredu mentioned - it devalues the horn as far as resale. Some people would argue when they modified their horn that they actually increased it’s value.

So it’s your decision if it’s what you want and the price is ok.
