I have done alot of searching on the net to find information about a truck horn install with a scuba tank.
The simple answer is yes, it can be done and for very little money.
All you need is a tank (which needs an inspection every 2.5years (£25) and air fill (£3)) and a 1st stage.
The first stage brings the pressure down from 230 bar to about 10bar (approx 150 psi) you then run the horn switch directly off a low pressure output on the regulator along with normal air/brake pipe.
I shall post pics or video of my setup as soon as i have time.
I do however have one question for anyone else that is running this setup. How long do you expect a tank to last for? I assume a fair old while given the pressure.
Well, I know that the tanks we use in the fire department are hydrostatic tested every several years. It’s only to check for leaks though… I don’t know the shelf life of a scuba tank, but from my guess it would be a long time like you said because of the low pressure.
Welcome to the forum!
Do you mean how long of a honk can you get?
I can’t answer that about a 3000psi scuba tank.
But for anyone to help they’ll need to know what horn and what size tank.
Line / valve size might help too - so list a few details about your setup…
Man, I’d hate to pay to have my tank filled up…lol
I think they need another type of test every 5years.
I run twin Hadley horn, 1 19 inch and 1 21 inches long. They are going on a car for the scum run 2010. Like the gumball but with cars under 500 pounds.
The tank is a 7 litre and is filled to 230 bar. The pipe is a quarter of an inch I belive.
I don’t know if anyone around here has used a setup like that.
There is a seller on ebay that is using NOS tanks - probably real similar.
You might contact him for some advice. Just a thought.
Im running some horns off my CO2 tank, been doing that for a few years.
The reason I did it with CO2 cause I use it to fill my tires wheel 4wheeling, but Im starting to look into getting a small compressor and small tank just for the horns, and keep the CO2 for airing up tires.
BTW, I get my 20# tank filled for $12, with the horns and airing up tires every weekend, Im refilling it about every three months, so it aint to bad
What kind of horn do you have in this set up? Do you have enough volume of air coming out of the second stage to honk an HB4 or a K3? The reason I asked is that a diver only require a little amount of air compared to the volume of air a horn will need.
Here are some pics and a vid of my install (not finished inside yet)
Excuse the half green, im in the process of preparing the car for the Scumrun 2010. Charity run across europe in a car bought for less than £500.
I dont know why people say its a dumb idea… honestly its a lot cleaner setup looks great and with non train horns like shockers hadleys and grovers it should last a pretty long time. and if you dont want compressor noise or dont have room for a tank and compressor its a great idea. my first setup was off of a 20# co2 tank and honestly if i do another setup i will probably do the same.
Im thinkin of doing mine like this. My bubby has a nbs silverado reg cab on bags with this set up. He has 2 of the big O2 tanks, he said when he plays with it alot it lasts about 2 weeks, but if just used normally, bout 3months…
