They do that a lot at the drag races here in the US too.
We also have the salt flats where they’re always trying to break a new speed record but I’ve only seen that on TV.

ThrustSSC holds the World Land Speed Record, set on October 15, 1997, when it achieved a speed of 1,228 km/h (763 mph) and became the first car to officially break the sound barrier (not considering the earlier, unsubstantiated claim of the Budweiser Rocket).
The car was driven by Royal Air Force fighter pilot Squadron Leader Andy Green in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, United States.
I seem to also recall watching the budwiser car attempt the same record… but because of a minor mishap or something like that, or it did not complete two runs??? but was first to break sound barrier unofficially?? cant remember??
