K3's are in...

Ok, so my K3’s arrived today, didn’t come with mounting bolts so i’m going to have to go to the local hardware store to get some…

These things look like a$$. They were painted, but the paint is running all over the place, looks like a crap job.

Where can I take it to have them stripped and painted? I don’t know if they are made of cast iron, aluminum (they don’t sound like aluminum), or some other metal so I don’t know if they need special treatment. Plz Advise.

they are cast aluminum and just sand them down and spray over them…

They just might be sand casted. K3. Get some paint stripper in a pint can and take horn all a part. strip then clean really good.

Send them to me, I will restore them.

for how much? I do remember “free” is not in your vocabulary.

Send me a pic and I can give you an exact price, and finish options. Free no. But my service prices will beat anybody, and you will get a perfect rebuild.

I have about 7 different options for restoration.

Pm or email them to me. MrLed@comcast.net

'farmer69" does a pretty good job… i highly recommend him and! he is a great person to deal with… i have bought some stuff from him before

Thank you sir.

ok, so after taking them apart, they aren’t THAT bad, looks like a crappy paint job on them… paint running down the throat of the horns… grease/dirt all over the manifold… some oxidation in the chamber… I can tell there was tape on these, there is a residue of tape on the #1 bell… I degreased the manifold so you really can’t see ALL of the dirt/grease. The internals look to be in very good shape. I guess I was expecting them to be a little nicer. It looks like someone painted over the serial number plate too.

Anyway, here are some pictures…

Looks like whatever goober painted them, painted them still assembled face palm lol

I’ve stripped many horns and with a thin layer of paint like you have there, I’d use Kleen Strip Aircraft Stripper. You can get it at almost any parts store, though it is cheaper at Wal Mart. It’s an aerosol spray and I’ve removed epoxy railroad paint with it. Just spray it on, let it sit, then the paint will bubble off and you can just scrape it right off. Shouldn’t take long AT all. Just don’t get it on your hands because it will burn like mess.

If it’s not sand cast, I advise against sanding it, as you will ruin the smooth, die-cast finish.

Oh, and one more thing… for that corrosion around the nozzle and all inside the horn, just use a brillo pad or some steel wool. It will get it right out.

can’t agree more, he’s by the way not just a reseller of trainhorns but way more then that.
great person and business to deal with… also very good prizes
