Leak question/survey????

Alight guys i just finished my new setup and i have a pressure guage hooked up to it. When my setup is completely topped off at 200 psi it will last about a day if the horns are not used before it drops down to the 165 needed for the compressors to kick on. Is this normal? I’ve heard of people leaving their setups for weeks and coming back to a fully pressurized tank. I’ve checked all my fittings by spraying soapy water on them and found no leaks so what im thinking is i have a leaky valve with a very slow leak?

How much air does everyone elses setup lose in a days time if not being used?

mine tops off at 115psi. after a day, it drops to about 100psi and the leak slows down.

BTW, I don’t have a check valve at the compressor.

i hate leaks.thats a major leak man.if you think the valve is leaking take the outlet air line off it,and listen to it closely.you should be able to hear that(quiet place).some times spraying soapy water could get tricky, specially if liquid sealant is being used. if you still having a leak, take all fittings off,and reseal all of them.check the air lines too.if you look at my set up ,i have lots of fittings.mine drops 5 psi in 4 days.i cant find any more leaks,so i left alone.there is no total sealed system with those fittings.over time you will lose air .good luck

Are you using teflon tape for the fittings? Thats what i always used in the past and always had leaks… So this time around im switching to loctite 545… Its recommended by a lot of people… Im in the middle of redoing my setup this weekend so hopefully by tommrow i can give a good review on it

loctite 545 will lock and seal.so you will have hard time taking the fittings off after.use teflon tape first ,then put on loctite 565 or 567 .those two together work well.leave the system alone over night, then pressurize it.

i have a small leak of like 1/2 psi per hour or so i’d say

no biggie. i’ve never had a completely air tight system, always a very minor leak. you, however, have more than a minor leak

I tried leaving mine for a while and did not touch the car.

after leaving the system pressurized to 115psi, after 36hours, it dropped to 80psi. here aren’t much leaks. the only leak I know of is from the air line to the solenoid inlet. because the horn is near the exhaust pipe, the heat softens the hose so it leaks. it loses the seal everytime. the hose clamp doesn’t loosen. the hose itself sorta shrinks.

I was thinking of running a short length of stainless braided line after the pressure washer hose that I’m using before going to the horn.

So i found some stuff called snoop that works a little better than soap and water and you spray it on to the fittings to find leaks …I ended up finding two leaks. So i re-taped them with Teflon tape and tightened them up and checked them today and they are not leaking, and my tank only lost 20lbs over night so were getting closer

Well if your looking for a airtight system which all of us are, why wouldnt you want it to seal and lock it? Also ive taken apart fittings that had 545 on it and its a little tougher but definately do-able! IMO , if you gotta takes something apart, and cant get it undone, just buy a new fitting for it…

I redid my setup today for the main part, got everything all plumbed except for a whistle which i need more air line for … but so far so good. No noticable leaks after sitting for an hour… true test will be in the morning

doesnt mater what kind of sealant you use,not going to have airtight system.with those kind of fittings.over time you will lose air.IMO .what h*ll is that mean"cant undo the fitting ,buy a new one".you still have it get it off.HAHAHA:eek:…

what kinda fittings do u have???i use quick connect fittings for 5/8od lines with a bunch of teflon…they never leak…i went to mexico for 9 days, left tank filled…came back lost 2-3psi…just use teflon…

A compression fitting is an excellent fitting that when used properly WILL keep an air tight system… Compression fittings are used for alot more than just air, i dont think they would still use them if they leaked water all the time for example.

Also what i meant there was if you cant get a fitting undone w/o chewing it up, then buy a new one… But i have never come across a fitting / bolt / screw i could not get out! If it wont move, get a bigger bar… or heat , or penetrating oil… But for simple 545 loctite , a standard wrench and some muscle will do fine… duh:rolleyes:

thats k .you are not getting it dude…now you telling me how to take a fitting off…duh…haha…whatever…:eek:

Its obvious you dont understand me , and its obvious you have never tried to take a fitting apart with 545… so to end this bickering …

i think i finally got it! only lost about 5 lbs over night! I think im gonna leave it alone for now…

was this mexican trip recently?
