Leslie RS3L or Nathan P3?

I’ve narrowed it down to 2… What do you guys think. It will be on a 5gal tank and a 1/2 parker electric valve. I can get more air/bigger tank if I need to…

They’re the same price and I know I want one of these… Let me know what you guys think, opinion, air efficiency, better on electric valve?

I think the Leslie sounds better also. How much air would be “enough” for the RS3L?

9 GALLON TANK and u can get decent honks out of it…2Viair 480s will fill it quick though

the leslie is much much bigger than a p3

Does anyone have the dimensions of the RS3L?

Quincy

27" long, 23" wide, and 9 1/2" tall is what I measured mine at (measuring by myself and just kinda eyeballing… wouldn’t be more than a half inch off on any of em).

I’d go with the P3 if I were you. Unless you know alot about Leslies. They can be a real pain to work on and aren’t really recommended for a person’s “first” horn.

I don’t think I understand what you mean… These are the same horns that are on top of trains for 50+ years with no issues… I have the room for it, I’ll buy another 5 gal so I’ll have enough air. I just don’t see why I should get the P3 over the Leslie… I’m not trying to be an ***, I just want to know why it shouldn’t be my “first” horn.

Ever wonder why Leslies aren’t on trains now? They are subject to fouling and stuff way more than P horns. i don’t think I’ve ever heard a Leslie on the same train for 50 years. If it was I’m sure it only half worked. I’m not trying to be an a** eiter, I’m just trying to help you not get in over your head on your first horn. If you want one, by all means get it, but like Izzy said, be sure to get one in great shape already.

Call me crazy, buy I still think the Ks sound the best. Just my opinion. I also heard that the Leslie horns corrode a lot more than Nathans, and the diaphragms cost a lot more to replace.

They’re made out of the same thing. They don’t corrode any more than any other aluminum horn. The diaphragms are more expensive though, around 70 bucks a piece which is ridiculous lol. Have you heard an M horn? You’ll forget about Ks when you hear one of them, especially a perfectly tuned M5.

My neighbor has been into these horns for years. He has quite a few of them laying around. He showed my a few different ks and leslies, all the leslie has 3x as much corrosion on them. They may have just been older though. I have never head the M series. he has one of them too, but I haven’t heard it. He said that they are air hungry.

^ but ya, he said they corrode more on the inside. I’m sure they’re not exactly the same alloy…

Well I have 2 Leslies and have had several Nathan horns and besides the Leslies being EXTREMELY greasy and “sootey” I’ve never seen them corrode any different than anything else. As a matter of fact, I recently worked on a 60s Leslie and it had no corrosion and had been in use for almost 25 years. I also recently worked on a K3LA that had SEVERE corrosion and melted diaphragms. I think it depends on the environment the horn was on.

soo since were on this subject, any advice where a guy can get a new set of diaphragms for a leslie rs for a good price?

p3 are smaller but have a great sound to them. i put one on my ranger and run it on a 2 gallon tank and i can get alot of honking done on it.

Man if I had an M series there is NO way I’d put it on my truck.

I’d convert my door bell in a heartbeat though
