Loud truck horn or fellow hornblaster?

So I’m doing my usual hornage in the highway 26 tunnel in Portland Oregon and some truck chimes in. Sounded nice and sounded aftermarket. I didn’t see any semi trucks in the tunnel. Maybe it was the pickup truck moving into my lane behind me.

Too bad he didn’t want to participate in a horn-off.

I think it sounded further back but you two could have a good one.

loving the short sharp bursts!

Awesome! Reminds me of when I got the same sort of surprise on the highway a month back, when I was letting my P3’s sing under a bridge and the guy next to me trainhorned me back. Cool!

That was a Grover 1600 (or 1601) horn that was being blasted back at you. It’s not aftermarket, it’s usually installed right on trucks when they’re being manufactured. If you wanna buy one, you can find them on eBay or Air Horns of Texas (15" and 13" horns).

Today was the first day I heard a (cheap imitation) train horn from another motorist. Man those triple-trumpet chrome horns aren’t that loud! I mean it’s a big upgrade from any electric horn but not bassy at all.

My HD camera doesn’t do too well with loud noises because it automatically lowers the gain once it hears loud noises…

Your horn is a cheap imitation horn too. Its cost (and noise level) is much lower than that of a real train horn, especially something from Leslie. Oh, and it’s rare, but there is one set of chrome horns that is VERY close to being as loud as the Buells that you have and that is the United Pacific 46115. I have heard both close-up and they’re very close.

It’s a poor-quality video but you can hear the reverb and how loud it is from far away. I also embedded a video of the air horns you posted about in the original post so you can see what they look like. They’re pretty damn nice horns, probably Grover’s second best type behind their stuttertone horns.

Yea that Grover horn sounded very nice.

The cheap chrome horns, they are made of steel like real train horns but chrome plated right?

It depends. Some companies (Kleinn) like to use spun copper that is chrome plated. The small pair you heard is most likely steel, which is something Wolo also uses. United Pacifc, Grand General and Grover all use spun brass that is chrome plated. I have a set of UP 46115s (that I will video when I get a new camera) that I stripped the chrome off of with household bleach (this is a good method cause it does not remove the primer or damage the metal) and painted them a flat black color. I also put the longest bell in the middle to give it a K3L[A] look.

Classic… gotta love people trying to honk back.
