Mounting tank in front of truck

I’m having a bit of a dilemma. I’m looking for a good spot to mount a 5 gal tank. I have ALOT of room in the front of my truck, just behind the bumper, I could probably fit 2 5 gal tanks side by side in this location.

The only thing i’m worried about is that thing fully charged at 200PSI exploding in a front end impact and causing more damage. Is this a realistic concern?

I also wanted to put it on the side of the frame rail, but measurements tell me it’s going to hang down an inch below the frame cross members, I don’t like that because it’s not protected.

It can’t go in the bed, and it can’t go in the cab. Any ideas? Anybody with a Ram care to chime in?

I dont like the idea of a 200 psi tank in front … Exploding and shrapnel would be bad for the engine compartment… Frame it or put it in the bed.

Yeah, that’s what I figured. The beds a no go, so it looks like I have to find a spot on the frame to tuck it, where it won’t hang too low.

Why cant you put it in your bed? I threw my compressor and tank in the bed and just built a small partition around it so nothing would slide in to the stuff. I still have full access to the bed and a hidden comp. and tank.

mount them where your spare tire would go. If thats a no go then your gonna have to go on the fame. I have one in the bed and one where my spare tire goes and that one doesnt hang low at all.

heres mine

I can still fit plywood or whatever under it and only lost about 1 foot of space to push something up to it…

I thought steel tanks didn’t create shrapnel if they were DOT approved.

I can’t put it in the bed because I put golfcarts, 4-wheelers, and bikes in the bed and they JUST make it right now, so eliminating that foot would screw me. I have a full bed rug, so in the summer when camping- I often sleep back there.

I’m going to try to frame it, I’d prefer to not eliminate my spare tire, once again- I got my golf cart in the bed and I get a flat?

Put it behind the grill… I was going to do that with my original setup on my truck. No one seemed to give me any reason why it wasn’t a good spot. I did read on this forum that steel tanks do not create shrapnel… I wouldn’t worry.

I mounted my 5 gal to the outside of the frame rail (on an F350) hangs from the bed support rails. It does not hang below the body either.

Is there room to mount it on the side of the bed over the wheel well? That’s usuall a wasted space.

I mounted a small 2 gallon tank in the front of a 2004-5 Dodge 1500.For my nephew. He’s a fireman. And in NJ it’s legal for a volunteer. To have an air horn. Installed a Grover Stutter tone. The tank is down lower behind the bumper. Where the inter cooler and radiator etc that the diesel model would occupy. It’s been there for a few years and no problems. And when a tank let goes or is over pressured the explosion is 4 to 5 times more powerful. I saw first had what happened after a air tank exploded and killed a little girl. they found the parts of the tank that blew up and landed two houses away. And took out a host of stuff in its path. And that aint no BS either my brother had to investigate the accident.

Sorry, for getting off subject but i saw a few mention about tanks.

I ended up mounting it up front, but still may move it because it’s a little cluttered there now.

Any tips for making the compressor quieter? I have a 450C and it’s loud as a mofo. Please don’t tell me to get an Oasis, I don’t have the money.

LOL! I have two of them they are loud.

I’m wondering about the Air Zenith OB2 right now. Does anyone know if they’re are quieter? It’s either the OB2 or the Viair 444c dual pack right now because money isn’t that great. Either way this 450C is too slow to be this loud, and too loud to be this slow.

Just so you all know, the XD3000 isn’t any louder than the others. I have customers who say it’s quieter. They will get louder if run when low on oil.

Nice Avatar!! Post pictures of your truck!

I mounted one of my 5 gallon tanks above the rear axle, but I am running with a 6" lift, so I have about 12" of clearance.

If I ever bottom out and that tanks drops 13", I’ll let everybody know the results.

Maybe I should purge before I go off-road

After looking at the Oasis air compressors you will need a whole new alternator just to run one of those. I have a 200 amp alternator on my deisel but don’t think my one alternator will be able to run one especially if it is drawing 180 amps.
