Hey all. Now that I have a feel of the forums, this is the best place to ask.
I have a set of horns that are decades old. It last sounded at least 10 years ago. They are all in great shape.
I also have a pair of horns that came off a 5 piece set.I have the tiniest horn intact and the either 2 or 4 horn as such:
I got mixed reviews as to whether I can use the one with the broken tab. Im thinking switch the broken one to the intact set with the manifold and find a way to fasten it?
Unfortunately that piece that broke off is gone with the wind.
If I were to take the intact other horn thats the same size, would a steel guy/welder be able to ‘take a casting of it’ and perhaps make a new piece in order to weld it?
Is that horn somehow usable without that bracket piece? I’m thinking if I switch it to that intact manifold and can fit a steel bracket around it, it would hold.
Other ideas?
I have to be realistic though. I don’t see myself being able to use the whole 5 piece set w/manifold. I would have to detach all 5 horns, find a way to attach them to the car and run an airline to each.
And I would like to use a manual airline and run in directly into the vehicle in order to throttle the horns.
It might hold with one bolt and some kind of strap.
Or make a plate to go on top of the pad & use both bolts. It would have to be “u” shaped to go around the center. The plate would bend on the side with no tab, but should clamp enough to hold.
If you’re thinking of the cost of repair - I’d just watch ebay for another bell.
The go for 80-120 if it’s a common bell.
Many of the people on here are drilling the inlet holes on their horns, have you considered drilling and then tapping the hole for a direct-fit air line? 6mm seems the size everyone agrees on - round up to an even 1/4" and the parts will be easily available.
Just another idea, and it’d be relatively easy for a DIY. Good luck.
Yes I can. Sorry I just saw this now. I’ll post one tomorrow after I get home from work. Or if you want to. PM me your number and I’ll send pic in a text to you.
By drilling into the horn’s original pinsize hole, I won’t be damaging the internal parts such as diaphragm, etc?
If you can show me exactly what you are mean, I can have my friend do it since I more than likely dont have the appropriate tools.
But I am totally game with doing it, just need a bit more coaching. So drill into it, what, a few cms then "tap’ the hole? Please explain.
(BTW, gents, sorry if I sound like a total n00b. I’m dig stuff out of people’s eyes for a living(trauma) but just need some coaching so I dont screw up my horns.)
Yea I just did last week its very easy I just took a 6mm bit and drilled and you will be able tell once the drill goes through a make sure you blow all the shavings out if any get in there the sound is much stronger still has the train sound but much stronger
First posted almost a year ago and you haven’t tried fixing it yet? Lol
If it were me, I sure wouldn’t try drilling and tapping the inlet out. If you drill the hole too big or screw up the tap, you’ll have WAY bigger problems. Get it welded which should be cheap to have done with such a small section, or strap/clamp it down like others have suggested. My $0.02
Btw, if I get it welded, what’s a reasonable fee? Im really clueless. And yeah I cuold use a strap, as I would rather that than drill, but Im still working on how to airline into the hron without a manifold without dropping $200 on brackets.
$20-$50 is my guess. Depends on where you go and who you can find. Stop by a shop and buddy up with them and see what they’ll do for ya, or find a friend who knows someone with the right equipment and offer them a 12-pack. Win = Win!
So you have a full K5 with manifold & 2 extra bells. You’re either going to need another manifold or brackets anyway.
Ever since you first posted this I’ve been thinking about just making 2 ‘U’ shaped plates. Install 1 from the front and one from the rear. The bolt patterns would overlap and create a plate sandwich. lol
Could you make a couple plates, or have them made?
If you’re not sure what I mean I can post a sketch or something.
