A little bit of scratching is okay, hence using fine steel wool. You could also try some model sand paper (Estes makes it for plastic model cars, rockets, planes, etc.) or some emery cloth.

Go super slow and watch what you’re doing, and it’ll be fine.

I would make sure to use REALLY fine steel wool and don’t really think any kind of abravise anything is a good idea. I’ve seen even the smallest scratches on a diaphragm cause crazy problems. I’ve always used brake cleaner and a rag but that’s just me.
