Need help with Ford Upfitter switches

Hey everybody-Heres what I m wanting to do. My f250 has the upfitter switches that are powered and I want to wire my electric air valve up to a switch so when the power is on, the big horns will blow and when its off my regular old truck horn is all that will blow. Does anybody know how I could wire this up? I figured I’d need a relay so I bought a 4 prong and a 5 prong just to be safe.

I don’t know much about the upfitter switches. They have been talked about a little bit.

Do they make a SPDT or DPDT switch? If so you can just use it to route power to either horn.

If they only have SPST (plain ol on/ff), you can use the 5 pin relay.

the switches are fused and just plain old up is on down is off. I thought I could use a relay and wire it up because if I didnt when the switch was on when I hit the horn button on the steering wheel I would get 12v from the factory horn and 12v more from the upfitter switch too.

yeah, just use the 12v from the upfitter switch to energize a relay.
A 5 pin relay would do the switching between horns.

12v from upfitter switch to pin 86
ground pin 85
wire from steering wheel to pin 30
pin 87 is (usually) normally open - wire to new horn
pin 87a is (usually) normally closed - wire to stock horn

This should allow you to “arm” your trainhorn with your upfitter switch.

I sure appreciate it. thats a big help.

If I were to use a 4 pin relay how would i need to wire it? I know I have 1 for ground 1 for power, I was going to just run a wire out to the horn outside to get the trigger for the electric valve. How am I doing so far?

I just finished my Nathan kit on my 08 f250. I used aux 1 for the horn on and off and aux 2 to turn the compressor on and off. Very simple and works well.

thats the same thing I was going to do. Did you use a relay between the upfitter and the electric horn valve and the stock horn trigger wire?

Originally with the 5-pin relay we were talking about switching between the stock horn and trainhorn.

So now you just want to use the upfitter switch to honk the trainhorn??
If so, no relay required.

Or are you still trying to use the steering wheel?

No relay, the upfitters are fused. The first two (aux 1 & aux 2) are 30 amp, 3 & 4 are 10 amp. No reason for a relay.

^^^If he wants to use the steering wheel button and have the upfitter ‘arm’ the solenoid valve he needs a 4-pin relay. In this configuaration the stock horn blows no matter what.

The relay isn’t for power handling. It’s for making/breaking the wire to the solenoid valve.

Ahh ok I got ya. Thought he was thinking he had to use a relay to wire to the upfitters.

sorry for the confusion. I was just going to tap into the yellow wire that gets power when you blow the horn to get my signal for the electric valve. I only want it to blow the k5’s when I have one of the upfitter switches in the on position.

OK that only requires a 4-pin relay and your stock horn will honk no matter what.

pin 85 - ground
pin 86 - + signal from upfitter
pin 87 - to solenoid
pin 30 - tap into stock horn wire

If you think you might ever want the the relay to actually switch between horns, get the 5-pin now and wire just like above. Then later you would only have to cut a wire & add a wire.

okie dokie…I got it now. Ive got it all laid out for pics and im off saturday so I should get everything bolted up by then. thanks a ton!

ok so if i wanted to use upfitter to switch between horns how would i wire the relay, thinkin i mite do this

sorry posted before I looked at first page, i think I got it
