need opinions on my new k5lar24

ok just won a K5lar24 off ebay for 605 shipped, my first question is was this to much, the horns are supposedly never rebuilt and have original stainless bolts. looks very very good, i will post pictures when they arrive. I heard a clip of them and from what i heard they sound great.

My second question is why would the horns be labeled in 1, 2, 3a, 4a, and 5. does this sound like the correct horns???

Last question is what would be the best compressor tank setup to run, its going on an 09 crew cab sierra and i will post pictures throughout the build, gonna go slow though, also where is the best location to mount them other that on top of the cab? How do they do in the bed???

Thanks guys and i already have gotten a ton of info from this site before i created an account. looking to make this a clean Loud Build.

Welcome to the forums. Sounds like a pretty good deal if the internals are ok. So do you plan on stripping them & painting or just wait and see?

Yes those bells match the model number. The L means low manifold. The A means American tuned. That’s why the bells are 3a and 4a. The R denotes which bells are reverse mounted.

I have a K5 in the bed of my 09 Sierra with about 8 gallons of air. The air goes fast! So you’re going to want at least that much. Then the rule of thumb for warranty purposes is 1 compressor per 5 gallons. Some people stretch that and buy the 12 gallon tank with 2 compressors.

Spare tire location is the easiest with the air package in the bed - or in a toolbox.

I retract my hard tonneau cover to roll around town. Next summer the horns are going behind the grill.

If you have any questions - ask away.

Thanks for the info. When the horns come in I am going to do a detailed tear down with pictures so yall can help me through the build. I may paint them. Just lookin to do it right the first go around. Pics and questions soon to come. And great lookin setup there ear 2 ear. Thanks again

This is my setup… 12 gallon tank, 1/2 in air lines… dual 480 compressors…
Works awesome with my k5la… and ya thats a great price u got it at…

where did you locate your horns scaredu and do you have 4 solenoids for one k5la, please elaborate why, thats also a clean looking setup ou have there. Also does anyone know if the two reversed horns on mine can be reversed back? I cannot wait until they come in!!! Also i have decided to paint the inner bells the same red as my truck and the bells and base black with red raised lettering on the caps, anyone know of a good writeup on the best steps to paint them??? Thanks guys and i am gonna start a build thread when they come in so keep an eye out!!!

Best site around!!! WORD LOL

been doing alot of research and believe i am going to go with the hornblaster horn air 540 kit with the SMC Nickel 1/2in Electric Valve Kit, This is just to get the kit operational and tooting along, any suggestions guys

This is an old picture…the horns are located underneath my truck where spare tire was at… I have actually turned the center horn around to face the other way…
I have 4 solenoids because my truck has full airride thats why…
Yeah u can reverse your horns to whatever direction you want…

yea that will work, but u will want to upgrade, i say wait and get more air.

^^ Agreed. You will want more air.

It doesn’t hurt to inquire about some upgrades when you place your order.
An 8.5 or 12 gallon tank is only like $13 more.
A dual compressor kit is only about $120 more.
That’s just going off of their separate prices.

If you’re worried about room, then that’s a different story…

Totally agree with the above!

I’m running a K3LA and a 5 gallon tank with half inch lines and a manual valve, and I can dump 175 psi in just under 5 seconds.

If you can’t buy it all at once, buy it in pieces. I had my K3LA and K5 for several months before I got my kit and did my install.

Kris

Not really worried about room, so i may go with the 12 gallon tank, what size dual compressors should i run with the 12 gallon tank, i only drive the truck about once a week on the weekends and do not really care about how long it takes to fill, just looking to get longer blast times. looking for not the cheapest but best value compressors viair has for this setup

also would it benefit me to run the 12 gallon tank at 200psi and put a regulator on it to the horn at 150. would this make the blast longer or is it pointless??? Thanks again guys

480 duals, and run it at 150 psi, that will be great cause the compressors wont have to work hard at all to get 150 out of em, in a 12 gallon tank sounds money to me!

thanks for the info, also will i benefit more or less from putting them in the bed of the truck mounted upside down to the bottom of the toolbox. using the bed as an echo box, or just put them under the truck, but i really dont care to take my spare off? Really asking about which mounting method is going to sound the best, loudest, and be heard from farther away

Yes, because you are storing more air. That’s the route I’m going when I redo mine this year. The dual 444s look like the best value, IMO.

The horns are loud regardless. I honked mine for my neighbor with my hard tonneau completely shut. It was still really loud. Definitely got the reaction I was looking for…lol

But obviously they will be at their loudest/cleanest when unobstructed. If you mount them underneath it doesn’t matter which direction either.

i have decided on the dual 444c’s 12 gallon tank, really debating on the graham white valve, “but dang its high” 145 to 200 psi pressure switch, all 1/2 of coarse. last question is whats the best regulator and what range psi should i be looking for? also does horn blasters carry regulators? they have everything else

also when i do the detailed tear down with close ups of the diaphragms and internals can you guys tell me if it needs a rebuild. also gonna do a video the day they come in of how they sound.

i think u should go with the dual 480s personally… i have em and love them.i have prolly put mine thru more work then anyone else in all kinds of temperatures and climates…i love these things…lol
and for your pressure switch i recommend a square D switch… i HATE with a passion those little tiny viair pressure switches…sorry viair…but those things suck… my square d is boss when it comes to pressure switches!

the only problem is it only has 1/4 fittings wouldn’t that be defeating the purpose of running all 1/2, does square D make a 1/2??? Thanks for all the quick answers guys yall are awesome.

no it wouldnt, the pressure switch just goes on a port in the tank, its not in your horns air line at all.

My bad i thought he was talking about a regulator, the regulator he had posted the link to does have 1/4 fittings though
