I got a few questions about my current setup and if I have it hook up correctly. I have it so right now the compressor is hook up to my parking light circuit from the trailer lights. It is not enough to power it correctly so I want to move the compressor to the engine bay. Lucky for me there is a vacant spot that is perfect and the compressor would fit nicely in there. Heres a pic (not my truck)
Also a nice thing is right under the fuse box cover(at the top of the pic) there are 2 studs set up for trailer lights and another random accessory. One is a 40amp and the 2nd is a 30amp and both are live. So I was going to get power for my compressor right there seeing its already fused and everything.
Currently I have my compressor turned out when the parking lights are on which I like. Its nice seeing if I let the truck sit for a few days the compressor cant turn on by itself and possibly drain the battery, and two I can just use a switch I already have in the cab for a clean look. So for me to correctly install this should I use this relay?
or should I just take a trip to the local parts store and use one that way. I do have a pressure cut off switch already but just want to make sure I do this right.
I also wanted to upgrade my system someday so if Im gonna be moving the compressor up front, I was thinking about installing a 2nd compressor as well. Pretty sure this is the current compressor I have already.
I have a 1 gallon tank but would at least get up to a 2.5 gal tank. Can I hook up two of the same compressors to help out or should I just get one larger one. It would be nice seeing I already have this one if I can just add a 2nd one.
Sorry for all the questions but like I said, just want to make sure I do this correctly and spend my money wisely. Im happy with this setup now but would like to have more room to grow in the future…
Okay well, for your compressor are you running positive power from your park lights straight to the compressor? Are you thinking of having the compressor in the engine bay and the tank under the truck?
Buy that relay from HB! Buy some thick gauge wire and an inline fuse.
You can add more compressors to your setup if you have enough ports or want to run a T of some sort.
Well what I want to do to power my compressor, is use the stud already in my fuse box that is already fused and is 40amps. The stud is constant power so the relay would allow me to choose when the compressor gets power…I guess my question really is should I use the HB relay or just one from like NAPA or AutoZone.
I would like to have the compressor in the engine bay, and the tank in the back of the truck where the spare tire used to be. Is there any problem with that? Too long of a run or shouldnt be a problem?
The biggest reason why I was asking about adding a second compressor was that they say the compressor was intended to be used with a 1 gal tank, sooo if I upgrade to a larger tank then the compressor would tank that much longer until its full. I just dont want to wear anything out prematurely.
Yeah that’s fine as long as you run a thick gauge of wire to your compressor(s).
For compressor location it’s totally fine you just have to remember you have X ft. of hose at 150 psi.
Yeah second compressors are great I really wouldn’t want to compress more than is recommended. Plus if/while you still have your small tank the fill time will be cut in half.
why not just find a key power for the compressor? there should be one under the dash or possibly in the fuse box to…
or you could run a constant power to a switch then from the switch to the air pressure switch, that way you could turn the compressor on/off whether or not the truck is on/off.
