Yo, whats goin on. Im new to the site but Ive been doing my homework. At first I wanted a hornblasters kit but after hearing them and then hearing the REAL train horn, There’s absolutely no comparison. I dont despise either choice cause its all about the sound youre looking for. Hornblasters are loud! And if you push the right air through almost any horn, its gonna knock your socks off. I’ve decided to go with this set up because I love the way these horns sound.
Nathan Airchime K3LA
5 Gal. Tank
Dual Viair 480C Compressors (200 psi)
Digital pressure Guage
I tell you, I didnt realize how pricy this stuff can be. The only thing I cant seem to learn is how long these setups last. I know that maintaining most compressors and tanks can be tedious if you use them all the time. This takes that to a whole new level because your tanks and compressors are being exposed to the element. So I dunno, I may learn some lessons here because as of right now, Im mounting everything under the truck. I dont have a bed cover and I need my bed space so underneath they go. Ill keep you updated.
no i really didn’t have any troubles putting most everything under my truck. I have one of my 480c’s mounted directly below the passengers floorboard in between the frame rails and the bottom of the cab.One of my 5 gal tanks is also mounted directly behind the compressor ( which is under the rear pass seat, under the truck ) then i have my Nathan p5’s firing straight down towards the ground. Now my newest addition to my collection is ( another 480c and another 5 gal tank ) are both mounted under my tool box in the bed of my truck.
I doubt it it but if it does it won’t be much. I have quite a few customers who’ve mounted the air intake in the cab and I haven’t heard one of them complain about noise yet.
Ok. now I remember. I saw your truck. Its the navy blue one. Your horns are loud brother! lol. Thats cool. I know on a BIG truck like that you have lots of room to put stuff. Is that where you originally wanted to mount your horn? The P5 is kinda big and bulky. Whats the difference dB wise between the P5 and the K5? How far have people been able to hear your horns?
Thats what I wanna hear because I dont have a clue really. im not clueless to compressors and tanks but Im clueless as to how much the horns demand. Those Viair comps on have a 50% duty cylce so… to me they sound fragile. lol. One other question, what kinda box you have in your truck? i have to single truck boxed but Im thinkin bout puttin better speakers. Im running those flat Pioneer Premier 10’s. How do yours sound on the 900W?
Ok, well I will do that. So Dan, you wont screw up the compressors by mounting them under the truck? I mean they can get wet and dirty on the outside?
50% at 200 PSI isn’t that bad. This means they are designed to run for 30 mins every hour. The refill time (165-200 PSI) on a 5 gallon tank with two of these is 1 min. 15 seconds, so this shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
Alternatively the Air Zenith and Oasis compressors have a better duty cycle at 200. (OB2 is 100% @ 200 PSI, and Dan is here to explain the XD3000/4000)
Yeah I read that on the Viair site. I dont know why Im so worried about the 0-200 time. I keep thinking that no air system can be air tight. Whats the best thing to use to fix leaks? I read that you shouldnt use teflon because of the horn orfice. But If the tape is just on the thread, how can it get into the line? Is there some kind of thread locker for air connections?

lol you haven’t seen my truck unless you clicked on some links that i posted, besides it is a bright red F350 srw Fx4, and my p5’s are very loud .I am not sure on the db difference between a k5la and a p5. I have had both and like the p5 more ( easier to mount, horn squeels like a train)the only place i could put my k5la’s were up under my tool box in the bed of my truck.
How to prevent leaks? Use the shortest possible air lines, use the fewest possible adapters and couplers, use only high quality parts, and use blue (medium strength) Loctite on all the threaded joints. Stronger thread lockers will work but you will regret it if you need to change your system later.
I really enjoy blowing them when i head to the gulf coast and i get to go through the mobile bay tunnel…my k5la’s and my p5’s were both crazy loud in there.
Being a collector, I can answer this… no, not usually. We either have permission or are far enough in the middle of nowhere not to bother anyone. Plus, outside my city limits, there is no noise ordinance.
Cool. Where I live there arent any mountains. And especially here, there arent any hills either so… theres no where to go and let them ring out like you collectors do unless you drive to the top of a parking garage. lol
