New guy-prolly w/ an insult!

Hey folks! Donny here from upstate NY. How’s everything?

I just bought a Volvo Tgb111C fresh from Sweden. It’s 24 volt.

My wife and I are converting it into a camper by adding the lid from a FlipPac camper.

I’m looking for a way to get a very deep truck air horn or train horn sound out of it, without compressed air. (I might add on-board air later).

This truck will be used for local SAR occasionally, so having airhorns anywhere on the outside is out. They could be mounted in the front radiator grill, but these beasts already run hot and I don’t wanna block the air flow.

So, I was thinking either one of those compact snail horns mounted up under the front bumper? Or maybe one of those electronic devices that have a bunch of sounds for you to choose from.

Any ideas?

If you want an excellent sound that is loud and has kind of a train horn sound, look for a junked Cadillac and take the horns off. Cadillacs usually have 3 or 4 horns that are tuned to sound like a train. You will need to convert the 24V of the car to 12v though.

Where in upstate NY are you? I’m in Ballston Spa.

I’m a couple hours north of you. I’ll look into the caddy horns, thanks.

Well, I remembered I knew 2 people in town with old caddies so I stopped by both of their houses yesterday. Cool sounding horns, thanks!

That’s a cool vehicle!
Good luck with your horn search.

Thanks. Been a lifelong dream. I’m now thinking I want something much lower toned than a train. Maybe something along the lines of a big truck, boat, or even an ocean liner.

You folks know your horns. Are we talking really long horns for a deeper tone? Probably no way to produce a loud, low tone artificially right? I’d need actual horns. How about those smaller snail horns?

I can’t imagine any electric horn getting too loud or very low.
You’re at least looking at some air horns for big rig trucks.

Yeah, a ship horn or fog horn would be cool, but the louder & lower pitched they get - the bigger they get. As well as their air requirements.

You should get on Youtube and listen to a bunch of horns.

Welcome. No need to convert the vehicle to 12V. Oasis, Viair, and Extreme Outback make 24V compressors. I’m sure about the other brands.

For electric horns (not the air horns with the pumps) Caddy horns are as deep as you are going to get.

Regarding electric horns, find out how much power they need and then check online for 24V to 12V dc to dc converters.
