After years of wanting a set of train horns i finally found an old set of k3la’s that I plan on mounting on my 2500 chev where the spare tire would be. I have a few questions about the setup I’m thinking about running. I’m looking at getting the Horn-Air 548 Air System and just want to make sure it will be good enough system to run them. I don’t plan on using them all the time just the odd blast here and there and i want to rig it up to blow up tires etc. Im going to run 1/2 line to the manifold with a manual valve but my question is should i wire in an electric valve as well so i can drain any moisture out of the tank once in a while? what else do i need to order other then the on board air system and the valve? Not even knowing how old these things are or how well they work should i buy a rebuild kit as well or just wait and see?
thanks for the info, Cant wait to get them installed and let them rip!!!
Well you can definately use the valve to drain the moisture. You will need some extra fittings, 2 for the manual valve (each side), 1 for top the of horn. Before buying the new stuff for the horns blow them and see how they sound. Take them apart and see how they look.
Welcome to the forum. Whether you should order a rebuild kit depends on the age of the horns, how much they’ve been used, and how anxious you are to start honking. I’d wait until I tested them first but then I’m not anxious…
Welcome. I agree with the other guys about not replacing the guts without trying the horns first or opening them up. Look at the diaphrams (metal discs). Make sure they’re fairly flat and no cracks. The components are really simple so anything wrong should be pretty obvious.
Alrighty. I have them out getting sand blasted right now because they look like they have been painted 12 different colors over the years do I will take them all apart this weekend clean them and see how they look. I’m
Glnna hook them up to 120 psi shop air to test them. Will that be enough to hear if they are working properly? I know they like around 150 to sound ther best…
That should be good make sure the air line from the shop tank is large enough(you want to push lots of air thru them), i tried blowing mine with our shop compressors and they didnt do poop.
