Pre purchase questions...

Hey, been lurking for a little bit and had some questions before I buy. I wanted to mount everything in the engine bay of my FJ Cruiser so space is somewhat of a concern.

  1. About how long of a blast can a 2 gallon tank vs a 5 gallon tank give off?

  2. Do you guys think there would even be a problem fitting a 5 gallon tank in the engine bay?

  3. What’s the optimal direction the horns should be pointed(down vs. straight forward)? Or does it even matter?

  4. Should I be concerned about heat from engine when installing the kit in the engine bay?

  5. I know the compressor only runs when the tank is empty, but do the tanks leak at all causing the compressor to go off and on?

  6. Can the switch provided be replaced by another aftermarket switch to keep my interior looking stock? I found a website that sells stock ‘rocker’ switches similar to what’s in my FJ.

Thanks for any answers. Looking forward to picking up a kit.

Question #- 1 What type of horn do you plan on installing? If you are going with a actual locomotive horn such as a leslie or Nathan, 2 gallon will not be enough. A five gallon tank is minimum. As for the other types of horns, a two gallon might be sufficient.
Question # 2- If you have the room, by all means.
Question #3- Downward is the best way because the sound travels to the ground and is dispersed evenly. If it is pointin one direction, well you know.
Question #4- Just make sure that the compressor has plenty of air so that it does not overheat. I would recommend as far away from the actual motor as possible.
Question #5- Use thread sealant tape on all fittings and tighten. When you are finished with the install, spray window cleaner on the fittings when system has pressure and look for leaks.
Question #6- Yes you can use a aftermarket switch.

Hope this helps!

I have a 2 gallon tank and 280c for sale lol. there is a link in my sig. 2 gallon was fine for my conductor horns at 150psi. i upgraded to 5 gallons when I went to 200psi. I liked them both fine. and I agree with pretty much everything Izzy said.

Thanks for the responses. I was planning on just getting a Shocker kit. I guess I’ll try to find space for a 5 gallon tank too. I have another question. I noticed the Shocker 565XL is $135 more expensive than the Shocker 548XL, but has a lower PSI number. I thought the more PSI, the louder the horn. Is it more expensive becasue of the different air compressor?

correct, the different compressor has a higher cycle duty most likely plus a higher psi… 480c ftw!

w00t!!!
