ok so i just finished 5 pvc horns and hooked them all up to a 3/4" pvc manifold about 8" long.the 5 horns have a 3/8"id hose adapter at the manifold and a 1/2" hose adapter at the horn.i am running a 3/8" hose from my solenoid to the manifold, the problem is at 100psi the hons are not getting enough air pressure and aren’t loud at all, if i run them 1 by 1 they sound great. what i wanted to know is how i can make them work together as well as they do individually. should i switch everything to 1/4"id or do i need a bigger manifold. i dont want to change my solenoid and want to use as little air as possible.
pic of horn, the hose adapter if for sprinklers, i have about 50 in my back shed and wanted to use them to save money but will switch to 1/4 if needed.
There isn’t a lot of data/experience out there for the PVC horns but, the general principle is the same. If they sound good individually & not as a set, they’re not getting enough air. Some part of your system is a restriction. So putting smaller fittings on the horn won’t help.
i think you small solenoid is the problem and yea you need a bigger regulator because if you switch the valve then the regulator will be starving the valve.
Im wanting to build some of these for my boys and friend to take to ball games. Plan to do a few for my car also. Ive seen they dont take much air to make noise.
they are quite simple to make, i can make them from memory and each horn takes less than 10 minutes if you have all the tools and they are cheap too.
only problem with the horns are, although they need little air to work they need a lot of air to be loud.i have a 5 gal tank and with the air regulated to 70psi it drains the tank from 150psi to 70psi in 3-4seconds.
i am alot happier than my op.got the 1/2reg. and solenoid and now these horns scream at 70 psi. i can push them to 100-110psi but it doesn’t increase the sound that much plus i broke a diaphragm at 120psi.
i compared these to a friends outlaw 3000 and these were much much louder, i will most likely get real train horns one day but not soon because these horn do the job just fine.
wow what you bulit the diaphrams out of??. plastic or metal? i replaced the ones i had from plastic to aluminum out of beer cans. and they sound great!!.. but they wer quad horns from ebay. they sound ok. this was long time ago. i now have two sets of shockers from hornblasters.com
I was wondering if you could post how to make the horns from PVC. I would love to try to make one in my spare time. I know you can buy the plans on ebay, but I have always thought that people selling plans on ebay was a ripoff.
