so recently i bought the viair 20005 2 gallon tank…
I planned on installing it under the bed of my truck, but my concern is getting it dirty/muddy
would it be best if i just put it in my bed (tool box)?

Lots of people have tanks and compressors under their trucks.
You won’t hurt the tank for sure, but the air intake to the compressor needs to be kept dry - possibly with a remote air intake kit. The other concern IMO is the wiring. Try to seal all the connections.
All that said - it’s not a good idea to mount the dang thing in a wheelwell or completely submerge it.
I have both my tank and compressor mounted on frame rail of my lifted f350. No problems at all. Compressor is mounted high on inside channel of frame and tank on the outside.
