I have seen people wire their switches both ways, using the positive wire or ground wires to activate the horns and compressors. I am in the process of getting ready to wire mine and I have to make a decision. What is the preferred way or what do you recommend?
Welcome to the forum. I think switching the positive might be safer. By switching the negative side the positive potential is there in case some freak incident applies a ground causing the system to activate.
I agree, I always switch positive. With stuff rubbing around there’s always the chance of self grounding which will activate your system if it’s switched using grounds.
I was thinking the same thing but read on here a few people used the negative. I installed my horns yesterday but I still have to run all my electrical and finish mounting my tank. Hopefully I will have enough time to get it all done this week.
If you’re planning on wiring into your existing horn circuit then you’ll have to go with whatever is inside the car. Some have positive switched horn circuits - some negative. Problems generally occur because people “assume” one type and wire up incorrectly.
I know that the GMC Sierra like mine is negative horn trigger. I was not planning on going that route though. I was thinking of just doing a separate momentary switch because if my wife gets in the car I don’t want any confusion.
