Is there any kind of nice wireless remote setup you can add to your train horns? Would love to park my truck and get some food at a outside restaurant and scare some People sometimes…
Most cheap ones you can find only go to about 80-100 ft. I bought one on Aliexpress
for $8. I am looking for a longer range version. I saw one that looks promising with a range of 650 ft. The system runs about $65. I have to check if it is momentary, latching, or a 1-2 second pulse.
Received the remotes and receiver from gatehouse yesterday. I picked up an waterproof Otterbox pursuits 20 box to mount the receiver in. I will post some pix in a day or so.
Here is the install of the Long Range Remote. The Receiver is shown next to a credit card for size. The Housing is not waterproof because it is made for indoor use to open a gate or door. I popped it out of the housing and mounted it in a Otterbox Pursuits 20 waterproof case.
I drilled 4 holes to pass the wires through. Once they were connected I used a sealer around the wire to waterproof it again. I used Ty-wraps to mount the Otterbox to the trucks sub frame in front of the radiator behind the grill. Try to keep the antenna away from metal or you will lose range.
There are five wire connection terminals. L to R in picture #1 (Orange) Relay Common, #2 (No Connect) Relay Normally Closed, #3 (Orange) Relay Normally Open. #4 (Black) 12V Ground, #5 (Red) 12V Power
There is a Function Switch in the lower Center of the PCB. Press and hold for three seconds to change the function. There are five relay modes. #1 4 second Pulse, #2 Toggle, #3 Latching, #4 Validity, #5 1 second pulse. We want the Validity mode. It is a Minimum of 1 second but will stay activated until the remote button is released.
In the the Function programming mode, each press of the function button moves to the next mode. The green LED will flash the number of the mode you are in. The programming will cancel itself after 15 seconds.
To program the Key fob remotes, there is a smaller button on the bottom edge of the PCB in the picture. Press it until the LED starts flashing. Release it and press the button on the remote. This will key the remote to the receiver. If you have more than one Key fob remote, Press and hold the small button again until the LED flashes. Then press the button on the next remote. The Receiver can handle 15 transmitters.
I forgot how I originally wired my horns, so the receiver did not work at first. I wired it differently and promptly blew the fuse because the relay caused a direct short. I found the error of my ways and put the fourth wire BACK in that I tried to eliminate. I tested the circuit with a test light and it all works. I connected the fourth wire back to the solenoid wire where I had removed it.
Tomorrow I test the horns with the remote and check for distance.
