I have a set of K3LA’s and some friends with K5LA’s with corroded back cap bolts. What would everyone recommend to remove a back cap bolt without breaking the bolts… I may know a thing about breaking them haha
There are lots of tricks. Try these in this order.
Soak in lubricant for several days.
One quick option that sometimes works is to try tightening the bolt 1/16 to 1/8 turn first, then start to loosen.
Another trick is to go back and forth over the available rotational range, if there is any movement, trying to gain a small amount each time, using liberal lubricant.
The bolt and the bell are dissimilar metals, so they will expand / contract at different rates and amounts verus temperature. Try putting the assembly into a deep freezer for a day, then try to loosen the bolts.
If that doesn’t work, then cold soak, followed by quick small localized heat (not thermonuclear) on the housing near the bolt, but not the bolt. Then quickly try to loosen.
Thanks I’am going to give them a try il let you know how i do
A good penetrating oil (what wingman is referring to) is your best friend. As shallow as the holes are, it should work great for you. Also, are the bolt holes drilled all the way through the other side? I’ve seen a few horns this way, just wanted to clarify. It’d be your best bet if yours were that way, so you can fill the hole with penetrating oil and let it soak in.
My personal favorite is GM Heat Valve, you can get it at your local GM dealer. Second best IMO is Kimball/Midwest Torq CB. Both of these are superior over PB blaster or any other penetrating lubricant that I’ve ever used.
Obviously when you get them out, find a better replacement bolt (stainless, with an easier bolt head such as a standard hex head).
