ok so i have a leslie rs3l running 3/4" airline all the way through but i am wanting to upgrade to a K5LA but just not sure how big the difference is. i mean i honk at csxs all the time and it sounds almost identical. I have never heard a K5LA in person and dont wanna spend the money if its not THAT big of a difference. any thoughts??
my opinion leslies sound better and are louder, i’ve had a k3 and rs5t
i like the loud deep note of a leslie myself.
you prob have heard a K5 at some point. I mean, most the trains in my area are CSX too, and most of their motive power have K5’s equipped. For me, it’s hard to find a csx with a leslie(unless it’s a former ex-Conrail loco) I like both, but a k5 sounds better to my ears up at close range…a leslie sounds great when it is about a mile out. Just my opinion.
^ I agree. The RS3L sounds amazing a mile or so down the road, but I love the punch the K5LA has at closer range.

That Leslie will be alot harder to find soon over a K5LA which are still being produced every day lol
