I’ve decided to take the plunge and get a set of Horn Blasters Conductor’s Special Model 540 in a couple weeks. The one question I have as far as setup goes is what is everyone’s recommendation on actually blowing the horns. I’ve seen some setups where it is tied into car’s steering wheel, some that have a valve in the front seat, some that have a push button switch somewhere near the driver. I have a homemade set that uses a ball valve but I’d rather have some kind of button to blow them. I was leaning towards installing a toggle switch that toggles between the stock horn and the Shocker horns and connecting it into the steering wheel button. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.
All just personal preference, so it just depends what you want. As you know… solenoids will give you that short sharp burst, versus a manual where you can generally regulate the flow to give a lead in or lead out sound from the horns.
I think linking the horns into the steering wheel button is the way to go because it’s just instinctive to mash your fist into the steering wheel when some idiot pulls out in front. Putting a secondary isolation switch into the circuit (so you can toggle train or stock horn) is also a good idea.
For all other scenarios my preference is for the manual valve. You can also install both kinds on the one set of horns. I’ve done that on my K3 install. You get the best of both worlds that way.
Thanks for the recommendation. I think I’m going to go ahead as planned and cut into the stock horn switch on the steering wheel and put a toggle switch on the dash board to switch between the stock horn and the train horns. I do like having the manual valve too but I think I’ll save that for a modification down the road. I can’t wait to get these ordered and installed. Once again thanks for the help.
Put a switch in to turn the compressor off manually If(or when) you get stopped sucks to have the compressor running DEAD GIVEAWAY!!!
I also use the compressor switch to keep the compressor off while I remote start the vehicle (when I rembember to switch it off lol) no extra battery draw in cold weather
Thanks Highoctane,
I’ll make sure I do that (Hopefully I don’t get stopped). I have another question for those that do have horns. I have a Lincoln Towncar that I’m putting these into and I have room both under the rear bumper and in the front behind the grill. I know these horns are loud and I’m guessing one location is as good as the other but is there one location that you all find better than the other. I don’t plan on blasting everyone on the street (maybe occasionally) but mainly to blast those on the road that have no common sense and cause me to swerve or slam on my brakes for no reason!!
The idiots are usually in front of you LOL.
If you have to split em up to make mounting easier, it’s no big deal.
I got the horns installed today. Overall I am happy with them but haven’t had a chance yet to get out and play. I ran into a few problems on the install. The first was when I installed the horns behind the front grill. I had them all installed, the solenoid ready to hook up and started running the 1/2 inch line from the tank in the trunk. Unfortunately the 17 feet of hose was just short of what I needed. I had the choice of either uninstalling the horns and relocating them or contacting Hornblasters and ordering a longer hose. Being that I wanted to blast them today I ended up pulling them out from the grill and installed them behind the rear bumper. I finally got everything wired up and took them out for a quick blast. I really like the sound but I am already missing my old set that sounded like K3LA’s.
Has anyone hooked up dual horns from a single tank? I’m thinking that I’d like to make another set like the ones I had and hook them up as a second set of horns. I’m assuming I just need to split the feed coming out of the tank with some kind of a tee and get some hose, a solenoid and pressure fittings from Hornblasters. I think I’ve found a hobby that I’m really going to like.
