So I painted my K5LA

So i have been thinking about painting my k5 but i couldnt decide upon a color. I didnt want anything in your face, but something more along the line of a gunmetal color. I did find this cool black metallic color that can come off as different shades when in the right light.

the pictures dont really do it justice

If you were going for gun metal look then I’d say Mission Accomplished. Should match the truck very nicely.

So are you going to mount those babies permanently now that you’ve got more air than Michael Jordan, or are you just throw them onto the roof for special occasions?

Looks great. Very close to what I used. (if not the same)
Is that the Rustoleum black metallic?

yah haha it is the same.

Did you clear coat yours. I tried clear coat on the back caps but it didnt look good so i had to wet sand and redo those…

i ended up not clear coating it.

No clearcoat here. It’s not super durable either… It looks nice though!

I kinda wanted it to shine more but ehh…

First post here on the forum!

Must say, it looks good. The gun metal finish gives the horn a sand cast-like appearance.

Welcome to the forum Bags.

I wanna paint my K5’s… or chrome them!

Hahaha i happen to stumble across this again and didnt see this question. More air than michael jordan LOL

Well i dont need to mount them permanently cause i have a k3 behind the front bumper which is permanent.

So yah its for special occasions… like car shows, new years, independence day and so on.

Only problem is i dont have a pump big enough to fill that 60 gallon. I dont think my york is worthy enough. So im planning on building a portable compressor with no tank. So like just a gas engine and a pump.

Sweet looking horns!!!

You could probably parts a compressor/engine assembly together from craigslist, lots of good parts on there most the time!

Why not? At DOT pressures it’s not like you’re straining the unit…

A York 210 is very worthy. It will take about 11 minutes to fill 60 gallons from 0 to 150 psi when its rpm is about 1500.

well technically it would be 70 gallons cause ill rig the 60gal to my OBA

ok so I did the math and I believe I will have to rev my engine 1000rpm which means my york will be at 1653rpm

in case anyone wants to check my math:
Harmonic balancer is 7.72"
Alternator pulley is 2.14" Serpentine diameter and 2.75" V-groove diameter
York pulley is 6"

yep, 1000 crank = 1653 @ York.

I recall reading that max RPMs is ~6000 for a York 210. (Danh, can you confirm?) I also seem to recall that optimal RPM range for a 210 is 800-1500.

If my memory is accurate, at ~1600 RPMs you’re just past optimal and nowhere near max – assuming what I read in each case was also correct.

6000 RPM must be an air conditioning application because in an air compressor application the crankshaft is spinning so fast it splashes the oil away from bearings which will seize it in about 2 minutes.

Its maximum continuous RPM is around 1800 to 2000.

That makes sense. Thanks for clarifying!
