I have a dumb question. Reading all the threads, No one mentions Supertyphones? Is there a reason or are they also called LESLIE RS3L. I am new to the site and just curious if I made a bad descision on my horn purchase.
Most folks on here are running Hornblasters or Nathan’s. I have seen some Leslie over on the horn and whistle board but not many over here. I am not sure what the superyphones sound like but I know the nathan’s K series have a punch along with the shockers and thats what most folks over here like, atleast I do.
I know they were used on most road motors back in the 80’s and 90’s. I am pretty sure they are comparable to the p3 and m3 in sound. I am really just curious of the db level compared to the other train horns.
thank you Izzy. I do feel better now. I guss rs3" is easier to say than super typhones jk.
Do they make a rubuild kit if I need one? I had to move the large horn to the center to make it fit above where my muffler was at one time. Will that hurt anything?
Rs3’s are great, the reason you don’t see them as much is cause of fitment issues and require more maintenance for them to blow good.
You were not joking about fitment issues. They won’t fit where my nathans were. I hope I don’t have to loose my spate tire. I spent 2 hours under my truck trying to find a new home for them.
That doesn’t look like a RS3L to me… It is a Leslie RS3 but it’s hard to tell from the tiny pictures. What bell numbers do the bells have? The smallest bell almost looks like a 55 instead of a 44.
It is a rs3kr by the badge plate.
Even better! The S3K is one of the best sounding horns out there; MUCH nicer than the K3LA. Here’s a video comparing the 2:
EDIT: By the way, it’s SuperTYFON, not superTYPHONE
Wow there is a big diffrence in the two. Today i bought the balance of things i needed. So for the final tally, two 444c, one 12 gallon tank, one smc 1/2 valve, adjustable pressure switch, one speedaire regulator, time to do install. Do any of ya’ll run a regulator? I would like to run 200 psi if possible. to maxamize blowing times. the regulator is a 3/4 in and out. With 140 max output. I therory sounds like it would work, but I’m worried about loosing cfm’s. any thoughts?
I have a 20 gallon tank @ 200 psi to run my horns but I use pressure reulators on each of them to bring them down to 130 psi, which is around the same pressure real trains use. This effectively increases the size of my tank while keeping the horns sounding good. I use 1/2 inch airlines.
Conner, when you really want bigger and better, check out the XD3000 or XD4000 air compressors. You’ll get 3 to 4 times the performance of those 2 444c’s, especially between 150 and 200 PSI.
