Train Horn Problems

Here are some pics of my set up. I have a toggle switch so I can transfer to my regular horn to my train horn. My relay switch clicks on and off when I un plug the power switch on and off. For some reason when I turn the power on to the compressor(manually) with the button, nothing happens. I have a new relay switch on the Air tank itself but nothing seems to work. Any help?

How do you have it wired?

I would cut the horn wire and run it to a relay’s input and out the normally closed side (NC) and back to the stock horn. The coil would go to a switch of your choice for horn switching. Ground the other side of the coil ©. The normally open (NO) side would go to the pressure switch (PS), out the other side of the PS to the coil of another relay.

If the relay is not inside the vehicle (near the compressor) or out in the elemants get a sealed relay rated for at least 30 amps. The other side of the relay’s coil would go to a ground. Run a decent sized hot wire to your second relay that is switched by the pressure switch. Hook it to the NO pin. The output should go to the compressor.

The advantage of this setup is the compressor and tank are not energized/pressured untill you flip the toggle on and at the same time it will transfer the horn ring.

This is how I set mine up. Just a sugestion.

The short answer to your question is pull the terminals off the pressure switch and stick an OHMS meter on it and see if you get a reading. If you do not have a meter get a test light, if you have power to it when the pressure is low you should get a reading on the other pin, if not its a bad one. Have you checked your fuse?

Sorry for the long answer, guess I’m a little bored!

So, I checked all the fuses. Everything is good. I put a brand new toggle switch and everything is good. All the wires are hooked correctly. Im thinking about replacing the relay switch tomorrow. If that doesnt work, what do you think it could be? My last 2 options after the relay switch is a bad wire or a fried compressor.

What do you think?

Whatever that switch on the compressor is for is turned off… that could be it I guess. Circle is off and the line is one on that type of switch. Might not be it but worth pointing out.

Was the switch on the compressor the problem?

I havent put in a new relay switch. I got stuck on this duty and have to be at work for 24hours so that suxs. The only things left to figure out is the relay switch, a fried compressor or faulty wires.

The switch on the compressor isnt the problem either

I’m still wondering why the switch is turned off?

Me too, what brand is that comp anyway?

The switch is turned on…unless you are referring to that it wont work…Apparently it was suppose to be Hornblasters but I called Mat and he said its not his type, so the shop ******* lied. He is thinking maybe its a freinkenstein set-up I have no damn clue

So you bought it from them and they suddenly do not remember it?

I don’t know whose pump that is… but its not a VIAIR. Looks like a portable compressor that has been “re-purposed” IMO.
I would not use this type of compressor, since its not meant to fill a tank - its intended to fill tires…

The temp of the head will eventually melt your air line. You would also have a check valve in that line, or you will wear the pump out sooner - and start blowing fuses…

Listen to him!

Looks like one of those cheap copy jobs.Test it with straight 12v if it doesn’t work, scrap it and get A viair

And I’m telling you that switch is turned off unless it’s wired up wrong. The O is off and the line is on.

We’ve never sold that compressor. For the most part we sell Viair, Air-Zenith, and Oasis compressors. We have had a couple of low price point compressors years ago, but none of them looked remotely like the one you have

I’ve NEVER seen one like that on the HB website either lol

Maybe he meant he bought it from another shop, not Horn Blasters?

Well anyways…I replaced the relay switch and the pressure switch so everything is working…and to my luck the damn tank has a crack in it a 1/4 inch long! What a piece! Im going to jerry rig it with jb weld then upgrade my entire system completely w/ HornBlasters.

For anybody that lives in Columbus, GA or the surrounding area’s do not go to Wolf Auto! They are great automotive upgrades and all but know nothing of Train Horn Kits. They said my kit was from Hornblasters and its not! Its from www.trainhornkits.com what a piece that is, nothing but problems. I was suppose to of have the Maximus 4 but instead they gave me the Maximus 1 http://www.trainhornkits.com/trainhornkits.aspx?CategoryID=62
So I payed for a Maximus 4 and got a Maximus 1, wtf!!!

I would go back in there and raise hell till they made it right!

x2 if I paid over $100 more than what I got, I would raise hell…
