Can anyone tell me how the k5la horns or p3’s are removed from locomotives ? specs would be great ive got a contact at a local railroad that said i could take a set off a junked locomotive but he has no idea how to remove them can anyone help me ?
Climb into the roof with a good solid wrench and unloose the bolts.
done.
ok do you know how many bolts are holding it down ? any idea what size wrench ? and what will i expect once i get those bolts off obviously an air line which will need to be cut ?
on a gp38, it was 4 bolts. dont recall wrench size as we used a larger adjustable wrench.
airline was screwed in, no cutting issue
ps what junked loco? would love to see a pic. please pm me if you dont want to post it.
LOL! I’m not telling you anything about how to get the horns off the roof. If it was really a contact, he’d let you climb up there and see for yourself. I’m guessing you’ll be climbing up on one at a siding in the middle of the night and want to know the quickest way to get it off. See for yourself.
This post makes me sick.
I am not a theif one bit and i’ll have whoever know i have never stolen anything in my entire life i will tell you this though that i am waiting upon written permission to go there and retreive the horns because the yard is not in my area my buddy has no idea how these things work he works in another department on rail maintenance and hooked me up with a third party for the horns
I just wanna go there prepared and not have to ask for tools on top of the fact that i’m getting these horns for free and again i will say i will even post the letter here directly from CN written to my name and i’ll even scan my drivers license to prove it but i am NOT STEALING these !!!
/doublefacepalm

I was not implying that you are a thief at all. Its just that it is becoming a huge problem and posting information like this just encourages ones to steal.
lol, However, I think there are alleged traces of impliction in this post below???lol
I think that’s exactly what we all thought Stink … I know I did.
Perhaps a post with more explanation in the first place would have been better, and the OP wouldn’t have experienced the backlash. Yes?
Kris
Posting here is not encouraging activity anymore than allowing this site to exist to mount on our vehicles what can be construed to many as dangerous and unlawful nuisances.
This whole website and business poses question as blasting horns, the way some here seem to celebrate, borders on illegal.
Having these horns and using them in cars may be illegal. Scaring people with blasts and potentially contributing to heart attacks, can be illegal if not leading to charges associated with death. And in this county, ambulance chasing lawyers grasp at anything.
I’m not blasting anyone here. I love the horns. The unknown Long Island bandit gave a quick blast again last night just after New Years, a joy to hear! He cruises down the street near us and I wish I knew what horns he had!
I don’t think anyone here can really point a moral finger at the original post.
Take into consideration the fact that there is a forum here that highlights:
run-ins with cops,
terror in the streets and
maybe getting a ticket
and these are from the titles alone.
Yet he has a legit question and a gift from CN railroad. Very cool. Those horns have a ton of history Im sure.
Chances are that with this hobby, there are far more instances of run-ins with the law over the horns themselves than with theft. Neither should be encouraged.
Theft of horns (a felony since it’s federal as it deals with railroads and yards) and scaring someone are an apples and oragnes arguement, at best.
I understand where you’re trying to come from, but had the OP better explained himself in his first post we wouldn’t be having this discussion.
Kris
Hmmmm agreed!
Diesel I follow what you’re saying.
But along that same line of thinking…If it’s already frowned upon by some or the general public or borderline illegal that people put trainhorns on their rides, we should be that much LESS tolerant of any hint of stealing. I made sure I went through a reputable dealer for my horns.
I agree with MarineOne. A little more information up front from the OP could have helped a lot.
I dont think a little more info by the op would of helped alot. I would have still been thinking “hmmmm… this guy wants to steal trainhorns.”
If they were given to you just take your toolbox be prepared!!
given to you for free?? hmmmmm something doesnt sound right…my brother works for Rio grande pacific and horns are always one of the first things removed from a locomotive that is going to be scrapped. If they dont get stolen before then.
Thanks for seeing a bit where I’m coming from. I do agree we all need to sort of lay low with the horns. Theft is intolerable. Pisses me off to no end!!
But…this thread sucks without pics! What loco are they coming from?! C’mon now
