valve frozen open

im from long island new york and it usually doesn’t get too cold here but a while ago i had a cheep air horn set on my work truck and on one of those single digit days i beeped the horn and the valve stayed open till the tank emptied. has anyone ever had this its been a while since Ive had air horns and i put a nicer setup on my jeep over the summer so i am just wondering if this is something i have to worry about if it gets cold.

this issue comes up every winter. putting a small amount of anti-freeze in your air tank should help keep your lines and valves from freezing.

It dosent help that the vlave was prob a crappy vlave if its part of cheap horn set. What set up do you have now? what vlave are you using?

That’s not always the case, I’ve seen a bunch of good valves freeze open too.

Glad I have a manual valve lol

I’m not sure what kind of valve it is i know it was maybe 40 dollars from summit racing. again im not entirely sure what to look for in things like that.

As I said, it doesn’t always matter what kind of valve it is. I’ve seen Asco, SMC, and Airlift all freeze open. Like Dan said, an airline antifreeze works and draining your tanks helps some too.

Get something metal and smack it on the brass once. It’ll shut right away.

I had mine do a full dump in midtown Manhattan when I tried to give a cabbie a little toot for pulling out in front of me :o

Shocked the hell out of thousands of people and I had to cut a bunch of corners to avoid the popo

When I came to a stop at a redlight, the tanks were almost empty and the horns made a peeping low air noise for about 30 seconds :stuck_out_tongue:

After wrapping the noid with fiberglass insulation and a scarf, it made it through the rest of the Winter without sticking again

Still trying to figure out a more permanent solution…

You should be able to use some HEET or wood grain alcohol to absorb the moisture, and then just dump the tank to expel it.
