which one?

okay so iv never had my own train horn but now its that time and i want one. i dont have a grand to spend on one. i looked at some cheap ebay ones for like 250 or so a while ago but didnt get it because i want a legit train horn not some cheap knock off crap.

i have no clue which ones are good but the one i have been looking at is HornBlasters Conductor’s Special 228VX Train Horn Kit. its 500$ and that about my price range, dont really wanna spend more than half a grand to be honest… but i dont know if thats the one i should get.

are there any other better buys or deals? any reviews on it or advice?

If you want a real horn it will cost around 1K real train horn brands are Nathan Airchime and leslie do not go with cheap chrome ones off of ebay its a waste if you just want a loud horn go with a hornblasters kit. Go on ebay and find a set of Nathan Airchime K3LA’s dont jump right away on them shop around as some you can get for less money, it would be better to save and get the best.

i mean it doesnt have to be so to speak “real train horn” but it has to be atleast like a hornblaster shocker level if you will… what i mean by a real train horn is that i dont want any cheap ones that say they are train horns but sound like a air horn or something haha.

i would like to stay in the 500 range if possible. im fine with building my own kit but i have to keep in mind, iv never messed with train horns so if i build my own, i have no idea what im doing ha:p

Well you can’t really go wrong with buying a Shocker kit, even if you decide later on to move to a ‘real’ train horn setup. The horns themselves are all the same in the Shocker range and are impossible to beat in terms of value and with lifetime warranty, there nothing to worry about in terms of performance.

Of course you can spend up on a bigger and better air supply system but the 228 is a great starting kit if on a tight budget. Just go for it.

yeah i mean iv herd nothing but good from it and iv herd hornblasters is the way to go.

now im not sure on how long that 2 gallon tank will last, i dont wanna toot my horn i wanna be able to lay on it for a weee bit, i dont much care about how fast it fills back up because itll be a one time hitter most of the time…
is a 2 gallon tank gonna be enough?

630 for the bigger 5 gallon tank is a bit more than i wanna spend but then again like everything else i do tent to upgrade so might as well go bigger the first time then to have to spend alot more later and have a spare tank/compresses laying around if you know what i mean

Sounds to me like you are most definately gonna want the 5gal tank  Just check the specs to make sure you have enough room for it!

i have a f250 so im sure i can find the room haha :stuck_out_tongue:

Five gallon will certainly give you far more flexibility into the future. The 2 gallon sets are quite OK though if you’re just sticking with the shockers. If you want to spend more on better gear then look at buying a faster and better compressor. Check out the chart here for quick comparison on performance and approximate costs.

Okay So Im Talking To This Guy About Buying His Train Horns From Him. He Says Their Klienn Train Horns, He Not Sure But Were Thinking The Hk Series, He Said He Payed 559 New For Them And Its Either A 3Gal Or 5Gal Tank And Its Three Horns.

Are TheSe Klienn Horns Any Good Or What Have You Guys Herd? Also How Can He Find Out Ao Can Find Out Which Kit It Is…? Serial Numbers Or Sertain Ways Ita Made Or?

hunter3014,
I remember struggling with your type of dilemma … but I wanted Nathans or Leslies and just didn’t have room for the air volume (10+ gallons) required for really long blasts with them, so I scaled back to Shockers w/ 5 gallons (at 200psi max) and am very pleased. Real train horns they aren’t … but the only people who tend to realize that are other train horn enthusiasts … and they sound very, very good for what they are.

I get a lot of honk time out of 5 gallons … and don’t think I’d have been happy with only 2 gallons. I probably could have lived with running at 150 psi max. Then again, when I lay on the horn I am NOT casual about it; perhaps 2 gallons will suit you if you don’t tend to stand on the horn when you use it.

If the guy has a kit he’s selling, listen to it and see if you like how it sounds! On used gear I’d be worried about the condition of the tank, though. Did he drain it regularly? To what was it exposed in terms of elements, rocks, etc.?

I am not sure about draining it but he said the compressor was in the tool box and the horns were under it. He is supposed to be sending me some pictures in a bit

Hey, if everything works and the price is right, then it’s how you like the sound…

Maybe you can find out the model number and listen to some youtube videos.

yeah i hope i can find out what it is before because its a 2hr drive there if he dont meet half way

At that price point, it could be a HK6 kit. Similar in sound to what you see sold on ebay as a ‘train horn’. You can see all the HK kits Kleinn sells here (plus sound clips)

I totally agree with the others here, it’s all up to personal taste. Go take a look and have a listen, make sure it’s all in good condition and that you’re happy with the sound and price. I haven’t heard the Kleinn horns, but I have heard the eBay triple variants which look just like them. They’ve got nothing on the Shockers, so personally I’d go with the S4’s every time over something like that. HB have a video review of triple horns vs. the Shockers - which gives some indication:

yeah i think iv decided to wait and just get a hornblaster… i might wait till Nov when my birthday rolls around and buy it for myself as a present haha… that is if i can wait, to be honest i might get froggy and buy it before then

Start with the shockers, you can’t go wrong with those. I have a set of Nathan K3’s and still kept the shockers I started with.
