Air compressor

I’m looking for a decent mountable air compressor that can handle the juice needed for a K5LLA. I found some on horn blasters but not sure exactly what I need as far as scfm… Looking to spend around $300. Any help is appreciated!

You want a air compressor that can blow a k5 without a tank?

Bryan has hit the hot topic here - you really need to decide first which tank size you’re going to go for. No compressor will natively blow a K5LA … perhaps with the exception of an Oasis which costs upwards of $1600. With a K5 you will want 5gal as an absolute minimum, plus a constant duty compressor.

If you only have $300 that’s difficult to achieve if you need to set up a whole air system from scratch (i.e. Tank, fittings, valves, compressor(s), etc). If it’s compressor only, I would only look at the constant duty line because you’re going to exhaust that air supply very quickly, therefore the compressor will need to work a lot to refill that tank - e.g.:

Any single compressor (apart from the mighty Oasis) will only ever fill a 5 gal tank max. If you opted for a bigger tank than you’ll have to save up for a twin compressor kit.

Hello Good sir, like some of the people have mentioned above ^^^ Look for a decent size tank. Heck, when I had my K5’s in my Pick up I had an 8.5 gallon air tank and my A/C compressor pressuring up the tank and THAT had one heck of a time keeping up but it sure filled up the tank with out any problems. took about a couple minutes or so.

The HornAir 5 gallon tank is pretty damn good and won’t break the bank. If you want a REALLY fast, durable and reliable constant-duty compressor for around $350, the Air Zenith OB2 is your answer.

Thank you so much! I’m thinking about going with the viair twin 444C air compressors with 5gal tank. That should do the trick

I have the dual air zeniths and honestly they are junk! They only last 1 year and then need rebuilding and I don’t use them every day in fact I would say relatively low hours they are good with customer service but that’s about it! I’m going the Oasis route next.

That’s disappointing to read because I always considered the OB2’s to be pretty solid units. Is that the 2nd gen version, and what size tank are they filling?

My Viair 480 twin kit is still running without issues after 3 years and they get regular use. Apart from the speed of the refill, I’ve been real happy with those, considering the money they cost.

The custom Oasis compressor system I designed and installed is an ongoing useful tool, in-addition to blowing my high-cfm whistle and my horns.

Yes, very disappointing! I thought I was buying the best when I purchased them. They only supply a 5 gallon tank and when they are new they work great but right at that 1 year mark they let go close to the same time. This time right at the 1 year mark only 1 let go but I’m sending both back.

Even if an Oasis could blow the horns without a tank it would be a very short blast.

Recovery speed and reliability are key!

That is disappointing to hear about the twin OB2 air zenith. I have a similar setup, which is about 10 months old. Both compressors are still working so I will keep my fingers crossed.

Regarding an oasis DC pump, would something like this one fill a 5gal tank pretty quick, and be reliable for 5 years?

FYI - Zoro often has 30% off coupon days, so the price is high, but if you buy with 30% off your talking about almost $500 off that price. Anyone know where I can get one cheaper? With BlackFriday coming up, they always have 30-35% off, sometimes the following ‘cyber’ Monday.

Also, is the wiring similar to other DC pumps, power in, and a terminal or built-in relay for pressure switch on these Oasis?

The XD4000 is the same as an XD3000, but with a fan cooled head which keeps it running cooler, so it can run for longer periods. The XD4000 is capable of running continuously (for hours) at 100 psi, at ambient temperatures of 75 deg F or less. If you need to run the air compressor a lot, use the XD4000. If you only need air occasionally, use the XD3000. They fill 5 gallons from 0 to 150 PSI in 55 seconds.

As long as proper mounting, power, and maintenance precautions are taken their life expectance is 2500 operating hours. Keeping the oil level between the middle and top of the sight glass is important so monitor the level daily, weekly, and then monthly until you develop that maintenance cycle. The life expectancy of those smaller compressors is 500 operating hours.

They have a built-in solenoid and a control wire with connectors that separate for connecting to a pressure switch.

Zoro.com has the lowest price for the first link and so will the second link if you use the 30% coupon.

Price matching is not Hornblaster’s policy but if you’re really nice to them and place a big order they might accommodate you. (maybe not the extra 30%) Ask for Rigo when he gets back from SEMA.

Thanks for the good information Dan. I am doing a 2nd instal on my pickup, I plan to go with the XD4000.

Dan,

Is an alternator upgrade needed for efficient power supply for the XD4000? What about running dual XD4000’s, will that reduce the tank recovery time to 200psi and by how much?? What upgrades would be needed for dual XD4000’s?

The Oasis compressor sucks 180A. How are you planning to get 360A?

What is the air load that needs dual Oasis compressors? Why not just use a decent air tank and decent plumbing?

They typically draw 150 to 160 amps with peak of 180. We definitely recommend using a deep cycle battery (Avoid Optima batteries from customer testimonies). The Odyssey PC 2150 (Group 31, 100 AH, 1150 CCA) can run an XD4000 for about 10 minutes without a power source. Your battery might be good enough but who knows until you try.

Your alternator might be sufficient if has enough time to recharge the battery between uses; otherwise, it needs to supply at least 150 amps for longer runs or 180 amps to run continuously.

Double all specs and reduce fill rates by half when running 2 of them and you’ll probably need another alternator.

Please be careful how you say that; “draws, needs, or consumes” sound much better…:D:D:D

Yeah!!! Drawing, Needing or Consuming is better placed than Sucking! Lol:D
