Air tanks ???

Hi im from the uk and want to have a train horn fitted to my car, tho 1st thing is to get the parts.

Start off with a air tank but seems not meny to choose from in the uk and i wanted to order from the uk (easyer)

So been wondering what eles can b used as a air tank i wonderd about

diveing cylinder? witch i have one but its 3000psi can i use this and only fill it to 300psi

fire extinguisher???

looking on ebay watching a few air compresor that the pump has broke on witch i can replace with a 12v pump.

hoping someone can point me in the right way and give me some tips to help

Im having a local shop make me an aluminum 10 gallon tank with 7 ports to fit in a 38" gap near my rear bumper and it not be exposed so much, the good thing is that its gonna be $160 usd and i cant seem to find an aluminum 10 gallon anywhere on earth.

Hi thanks for the reply , i was hoping to go down an easyer route haha

done some searching and maybe porpane tank mite be the anser, hoping that someone has done this on hear

Run a search of the forum, I know there have been discussions in the past about using dive tanks.

I don’t see an issue with that, fill it to 3k psi then use a regulated or gauge down to 150psi. That would work well I bet besides the fact that you would have to get the tank refilled for a fee.

I have used a fire extinguisher tank before I used a surplus truck air brake tank. worked fine, the fire extinguisher is just bulky so I replaced it

Got any pics or a guild?

I did a search didnt really come up with much.

I just wanted to no if it would be ok to use a drive/fire bottle and only fill it to 300psi not 3000psi. i wouldnt fill safe driveing with 3000psi in the back lol

I searched for scuba:

Yeah i read that didnt really help much :frowning:

Going be a diy thing then

I have pics somewhere in “your ride” forum. I think the title was “my toyota” or something like that.

I have customers who use the air tanks off of the big trucks.

I used a fire extinguisher on my car and worked out pretty well since i had it for free.
I’ve been told that specialized shops have to pay to trash them once expired… so i asked them one and brought them some coffee to thank 'em.

The problem now is that the fire extinguisher hose is 1/4" and my next line for the K3HA i ordered will be 1/2" so i’m trying to figure out how to solve it.

The idea of making an aluminium tank with custom size is very interesting, i’d pay for such a thing… but here where i live people don’t like things like that and i should do almost all by myself, that means buy the aluminium, cut, bend, grind and bring everything to some shop asking them to solder the way i want it W/O any sort of guarantee, but i still like the idea.

BTW a fire extinguisher is the best solution if you want to save money (as i did), otherwise buy it in some stores in UK like Homebase, they should have something, or maybe Argos?

This is what i did:

the tank looks like it has one port so you can either fill it or use it but not both, right?
if you’re planning to use a compressor, you’ll want at least 2 ports.

I use a T connector between tank and compressor.
Here’s a pict:

This morning i’ve installed a no-return valve between the compressor and the T connector you see in the pict.

It makes no difference how many holes the thank has, even if you have a two holes tank the air filled with the compressor is automatically spreaded in the other hole…

So… i blasted more then once while the compressor were running… and honestly, it didn’t fill immediately… but it didn’t cause any problem to any of the components of my whole system.

hmmm… nylon tubing coming off of a compressor head that puts out enough heat that could literally burn you… the sticker on your compressor says it all… Caution HOT = can melt plastic…

no pressure switch or a proper gauge on a tank that is not intended for that type of use not to mention no use of a saftey pressure relief valve = bad things… ( as in time bomb waiting to go off in your trunk…)

If you are going to have a on board air system in your vehicle please use some common sense as in selecting the proper tank and using a pressure switch on the compressor so you know you are not over filling your tank beyond its maximum rated pressure. and always use a pressure relief valve… when a tank is filled to maximum capacity on a cool morning or night then let sit in a hot trunk during the day can increase psi to a dangerous level… heat causes air to expand.

and always use a leader hose that is steel braided and heat rated… when air is compressed it becomes very hot air… along with the heat generated from the compressor while running can easily melt nylon and some rubber hose.

I think you are right about the nylon coming out of the compressor, i never thought about that. i’ll replace the whole line and never put nylon again… and i’ll use a metal hose as you suggested.

I searched for a pressure switch all around here (where i live) but i had a hard time finding one which would fit my requirements, the only place i found it was hornblasters.com but adding shipping to italy would be a little too expensive for the kind of system i was building so i decided to skip it.
If you take a look into the Installs section you’ll find my system (actually used for a firetruck horn), i have a pressure gauge into te dash which constantly tells me the pressure. You will also find out that i have a problem with the compressor because it is rated 150psi but it doesn’t fill over 125psi.

So another thing which is actually useless to me is the pressure relief valve… since it won’t go over 125psi… and even on a hot day it won’t increase SO MUCH. I’ll need a manual relief valve tho, just in case i have to remove/replace the system for any reason, i’ll do that in my new system.

The fire extinguisher normally works at 160psi but i think it may hold up to 200psi.
I made this system knowing that my 1510 horn works at maximum 120psi… so i will obviously replace the tank for my new system.

Unfortunately everything costs money and being not in the US things will cost me even more. :frowning:

Yeah I’m surprised that nylon hasn’t melted already if you’ve been using it. You need to get rid of the nylon on the air filter side also. If you didn’t already know, you don’t need to remote mount the filter if you are running it in the trunk. The remote mount is used to keep the air intake out of any moisture if you mount your compressor in a spot that is subjected to moisture. In your trunk you can just screw that filter directly into the comp.

Other than that I can appreciate the ingenuity of getting that fire extinguisher to work as an air tank.

the reason why i used nylon between compressor and filter is because if i mount the filter directly on the compressor vibrations make shake it causing a lot of noise.

About the fire extinguisher i read a guy on a site which used one with a fridge compressor to make an aerography system… he was so happy and satisfied that tempted me.
But of course now i’m valuating the idea of making a custom tank to hide under the rear bumper, that would save me a lot of room inside the trunk and save the exthetic of the car.
