(Cheap) Alternatives to horns

I was thinking about how loud a car sounds without the exhaust and wondering whether it would be possible to route the exhaust through a horn. Normally a horn converts high pressure into sound (alternating pressure) so I’m not sure what would happen if you were to supply a horn with sound. I guess the other problem is that you’d need all metal tubing to handle the high temperatures.

Another method would be to put a speaker in the front of your car and connect it to the car radio, and use a cheap mp3 player with a horn recording on it. The only problem here is you’d want to max the volume on the radio every time you use it. I’m assuming you’d have a switch to switch from the normal speakers to the one up front. This gives a system that takes a lot of hassle to use, probably would be better to use a cheap separate amplifier.

Then I thought, what would happen if you connected the ignition coil to a speaker? It does after all output a wave… a very spiky wave Or you could use an inverter (converts 12V DC to 240V AC 50Hz)

I know i dont have much room to talk cause i have not ordered my kit yet but i am next week when i get home from vacation. but why not just buy a horn and be done with it? but i mean its your choice but the speaking sounds like a intersting idea lol if you do that take some pics or a vid!!

sometimes when I’m with my friends cars without horns, I just yell out the window. “Oh shit watch out!” is a good one. Just make sure your friend knows or you might swerve/crash.

You can actually make a exhaust whistle that is similar to a steam whistle. That can be quite loud. If made right. I have seen them on tractors and some cars. The people used a throttle body from a car and used that as the valve to blow the whistle. It quite neat.
