Is it rude to ask for old train horns?

So I’m living in Pensacola. I sometimes hear about people that get a free train horn or two from a train station ( I see it online, not from the train stations in pensacola) . I was wondering if it is rude to ask a train station if they have any old train horns. Do they keep the old ones? Do you think I would have any luck? I have no idea if they keep them or are allowed to give them away or sell them for cheap, but I hope someone on here knows. If I could get a K3 that needed restoring, I would jizz in my pants.

try you have nothing to lose… just don’t steal it from any trains lol…

Too late I got three k5’s last night…

jkjk I would NEVER steal it off a train. It’s prob worse than stealing cause if they don’t notice it someone might die at a railroad crossing due to no horn…

well down here in Miami if the railroad police gets you stealing a train horn from a train you get into big troubles

lol yeah it would be some bad stuff I’m guessing. I’m not wanting to mess with pensacola cops : 0

well good luck at the train horn station if you get some free horns let me know so i can go and ask for some too haha

Trippy mate, if you dont ask, you will never know, hey wots the worst they can say??? NO!!! Hell mate go for it… give them some old B/shite that ya grandad used to work on the trains etc etc etc

So I did call a few places, but they said they don’t deal with that. Only one picked up. All other places were busy or closed…

Then keep trying tomoz dude… lol Our horns are gay, so i would not call my railline, only get put on hold for an hour whilst they drink their tea lol

I had the same idea a while back but with a different twist. There is a railroad club made up of old time retired railroad employees. They volunteer their time to restore old train cars which are donated or purchased cheap via fundraisers. They do scenic trips in the vintage trains during the year complete with all the old crew: conductors, porters, yard workers, you name it.

So in their rail yard they have literally hundreds of various rail cars, some newer and some older, but most in need of major repair. I figured there just has to be some spare horns laying around that place. I called them and left a few messages. No response at all. I emailed them a few times. No replies. I found the club president’s info and called him at home - never returned my call.

I was pretty hacked off by the fact that they didn’t at least reply or call me back once, even if only to tell me no. And I explained that I was willing to donate some money and/or time to their cause too. Only thing I could figure is that they either don’t have spare horns or they are even more valuable to railroad people than they are to us. And they probably don’t like people like us installing train horns on our vehicles. To them it is probably a sacrilege or dangerous hobby and I’ll bet that they swear at us when we honk back at them as they pass us by the road.

Oh yeah, I wasn’t planning on telling them that I wanted to put it on my car lol!

yea ive been thinking of asking my local CSX maintenance yard, havent asked them though

I think the one I got a hold of was the maintenance yard. They basically said they don’t mess with the horns, its some place in Georgia.

I believe it would be rude to ask them to give you one. I ask scrap yards and railroad employees all the time but I offer to pay first thing. A train station wouldn’t have any horns. Best bet would be a yard or a scrapper. The going rate is usually 100 per bell with the manifold thrown in. And do not say anything about putting them on your car, they will deny you. It’s really hard to find em and usually collectors have a hard time even getting them. Oh and another thing that makes it hard to find them is almost every employee knows what they are worth now so when one gets pulled off they get first dibs and give them or sell them to friends.

lol is it rude? who cares… i wouldnt offer to pay for it first… i would ask for them for free and if they say yes we have them and no you cant have it only then would i offer to pay

And offering to pay first could make the difference. If you just go up and say “hey do yall have any horns I can have?” they’d be less likely to let you have them than if you offered to pay first. I got one this way once. Offered to pay and he said nah don’t worry about it.

Agreed… didnt think he would continue to post about it…

fixed…

and to each his own lol i’m not gonna pay for it if they would give it to you for free… and if you dont ask you wont ever know because you ended up paying for it

best thing o do is ask for free and to pay at the same time “hey do yall have any horns that you are getting rid of or that i could buy from you?”

That’s probably the best thing to ask right there lol

You will have to find a train scrap yard. I know someone that has a connection to one. They are the places you have to look for. And alot of Rail road places, are catching on to the train horn craze. So they won’t give anything up.

Good Luck,

John

Thanks for the advice. Man, it would be sooo sweet to have a k3. Even if I didn’t put it in my car. My sister wants my shockers though LOL.
