My Train horn build, Nathan K5's

I will half to look at it all.

I was short 2 ptc fitting and needed 2 more for the regulator. Called hb Thursday and ordered 2 and told them I was short two. They said they would send 4. Well I only got two so the last parts I need is the last 2 ptc fittings. I had to order loctite 545 of the Internet.

Well got the last of my parts ordered. Should be in in two days. I have decided if I can’t get everything to fit under my truck and I end up putting the compressors and tank in my bed, I am going to upgrade my tank size. If it won’t fit underneath I am going to see if hb will exchange it for a 12 gal, plus what the difference is. If they won’t I will get a second tank and hook the two together. I will probably do a 2.5 gal add on and that will put me at 10 gal. Or I could do a 5 gal and have 13.5. Y’all think that would be too hard for two compressors?

I went through similar complications when designing my tank configuation. I had ordered a 12 gallon tank from HB thinking i was going to put it in the bed, then i decided to remove my spare tire and was going to go with 2 5 gallon tanks so i ordered 1 5 gallon tank to see how it would fit. My final decision was to go with 2 8.5 gallon tanks so i ordered both of those and they barely fit, but they FIT. I was going to send back the 12 gallon and the 5 gallon tank for store credit, but after calculating the return shipping costs, it really didn’t make sense at all to return them. Just think about it, The shipping costs (from california to florida) are more than 50% of the cost of the tanks. My advise to you is to put them on a shelf in your garage (where mine are) and use them for certain horn blasting experiments. You will find a use for them somewhere, don’t spend money unnecessarily on return shipping costs.

I was already pondering that. Lol I guess I will just add a 5 gal if I can’t get it to fit under my 07 f150. You think I will have any issues if I connect a 8.5 and a 5 gal to make 13.5 and use 2 480c compressors to fill the tank to 200 psi? That is my main worry. If that is too much of a risk then I will just add a 2.5 gal tank to make 10.5. He’ll I guess I could do a 4 gal tank and end up with 12.5 gal … Hm?

Tank capacity is great, but keep in mind those compressors are only rated to handle 5 gallons (per compressor) Technically, you should have a max tank capacity of 10 gallons. Now lets get real here, the more capacity the better, thats why i have a 100 gallon tank in the bed of my truck plus 17 gallons under the bed. I say go for it man, just if you are continually blasting that horn, dumping your air several times, flip off your compressor switch occasionally to let them cool and you will be fine.

Ya that’s why I was curious as to how much risk would be in going over the 5 gal per compressor limit. With the 8.5 and a 5 gal equaling 13.5 that’s only 3.5 gal over the rule. Plus most folks run 12 gal tanks with / 480c’s so would 1.5 gal more just kill em? And I will probably honk alot the first few months then it will slow down I figure. Shouldn’t be refi log them every day for that matter. During the summer I mainly drive my Harley.

I wonder why the 5 gallon rule when the compressor is rated 100% duty?

^^ I agree.
If they can run for an hour, who cares how big the tank is.?

J.Walton - People do run their compressors on more than 5 gallons and they live fine… The potential is there to overheat them so you have to be careful. It’s up to you as far as voiding the warranty.

ok. well we will hopefully be working on the install this week!

Ok so I updated the thread on the

http://www.fordfullsize.com/forum/f56/my-train-horn-build-nathan-k5s-2711/

I mounted them where the spare tire went. Everything is mounted on one plate and gets lifted/ lowered with the spare tire cable. I have added another security feature so that it can’t just be let down and walk off. Check it out, let me know what y’all think.

Looks great. Make sure the paint is removed under those grounds. And make sure some bare metal on the plate is attached to some bare metal on the truck frame.

We scraped the paint away where the ground is and ran a 12" 8 ga with eyes on both ends so that one end is bolted to the plate and the other end I will bolt to the frame.

J.Wal

That’ll do it! Couldn’t tell by that pic of the grounds.
It looks heavy with everthing mounted…lol

Sorry it’s in a rush but here are the final install pix.

Any questions just ask.

J.Wal

looks really good…i like the location of the digital gauge!

I thought we weren’t supposed to mount the compressors upside down… :frowning:

I was told that it would be a problem if they ran all the time. But they don’t run all the time.

J.Wal

Last one. About 5.5’ high was wheee the camera was and about 1 car length back.

If you know what you are looking fore you wouldn’t see it too much.

J.Wal

I’m really diggin’ the pressure gauge mounting area … very nice install bro.

Kris

you should put a hornblaster logo somewhere…
