Ok so I installed my horns and everg seems to be ok but my compressor is not filling up my tank or so I think. My pressure switch is 200/170 I am getting about 120 and then not producing anymore or the gauge is not reading. Also after I honk it I still hear one of the horns blowing a Lil making a hum. Please help
Almost sounds like your valve is sticking open a little. What horns do you have?
They are a cheap brand called pipeman so what should I do
Buy a better horn! LOL! Alright, a few other questions from me…
1.) How old are they?
2.) When the compressor fills up to the 120, when you shut it off, does the PSI drop?
3.) Is it an electric solenoid in the center of the trumpets?
If the PSI is dropping when the vehicle sits, then you have developed a leak. Reason I ask about how old they are and the electric solenoid, I had a set of chrome horns. I had the little solenoid in the center of the trumpets, and after the first year, the internals weakened up. They didn’t seal very well so it was leaking from that. I was getting a very faint horn sound when the tank would run low. I replaced the solenoid and my problem went away.
Once others see this, they can help you out too so see what they say also.
I’m also curious of the compressor. I bet theres a good chance the compressor is only rated at 120 psi, and if thats the case you need a 120psi pressure switch.
That thought didn’t even cross my mind… That could explain the horn sound too. If there is too much air pressed against those diaphragms, then it will eventually force it’s way out if the solenoid if it’s rated for 120 PSI also…
Recovery—they are about 3 months old, They are electric, and pressure seems to drop when I shut it off but I have to manually shut it off otherwise it keeps running to fill tank.where did you get the solenoid from.
Don’t know of this matters but the compressor is mounted on my frame but sideways.
06z71—the compressor is rated at 200psi
Get a mixture of warm soapy water and check all of your connections where the air hoses meet the fittings. If the soap bubbles, you have a leak. Has it done this since you first installed them? Did you use any kind of thread locker or Teflon tape? If not, then chances are any connection that you made are leaking. Depending on how many leaks you have, there is a lot of room for the air to escape, not allowing the tank to properly fill. Once you correct any leaks, then the compressor should keep going past the 120 PSI mark and shut off once it fills completely. Try this as a first step.
As far as the solenoid, I bought them from a company which is now out of business. This happened to me about 5 years ago now…
kidn, what kind of compressor is it? model #? How old is the compressor?
Don’t know what brand name of compressor but I got it off Ebay if you type in 200psi train horn its a kit just a tank and compressor.
As for all the fitting I did use Teflon tape but will go offer it with soapy water.
does it matter how the compressor is mounted
Its a 3gal tank and don’t know the name of the compressor I got out off ebay if you type in 200psi train horn it should come up.it was just the tank and compressor. I did use Teflon tape but will check with soapy water
Does it matter how the compressor is mounted.
Have you tried a different air gauge to make sure that one is not reading incorrect?
Also how long is your wiring run going to that compressor and what gauge? You might be overdrawing on the run which is not supplying the amps it needs for the higher psi. Check wiring for heat while its running.
Most compressors can be mounted any way except upside down. BUT i dont know about your compressor since we dont officially know the brand. When i type in 200 psi compressor in ebay it brings up innexpensive / cheap compressors that are no name china made… On this forum you will mostly find helpful info pertaining to name brands-- Viair , hornblasters , Airchime , Zenith , etc…
No, it is an oil-less compressor so it can be mounted sideways. I know I’ve heard it shouldn’t be mounted upside down though, but it will work sideways.
Ok no I have not tried a different gauge…the wiring is about 4 ft long with about 14 gauge I think. At what gauge of wire should I be running.
bigger = better… I have 4 awg run to my dual pack. for your 1 i’d recommend 8-10.
Try and run direct to battery with the leads coming off the compressor and see if it fill up higher than 120.
Ok will try
Find them there leaks first!
If the compressor continues to run, but pressure will not build, it is not the wiring.
I agree you could stand to use bigger wire, but it’s not causing your pressure problem.
I had a shop compressor that I ran a little too long last fall and it ruined the head gasket. Would pump up to 50-60 PSI but wouldnt go above that. You may have a small airleak that anything above 120 is forced out the head.
Look around the compressor for signs of damage.
So what else could be the pressure problem
How close is the valve to the horns? Directly mounted or a long airline between valve and horns?
If it is directly mounted to the horns it should immediately shut (and stop sounding) when you release your button. Based on your OP the valve might be bad.
First get some soapy water out and check all your fittings. It’s easy and narrows it down.
