I hate headach racks, and roll bars. So I want to make something custom to mount my horns above my cab, and modeled this. Have K3LA’s. Tell me what you think, and if you have any better Ideas. Here’s what I’ve came up with so for:
Thanks for the Help
under the truck bed where spare tire is located…
Well, if you’re hell bent on doing this then you need to reinforce it.
There is alot of air coming from the hood over the top of the cab, and those horns will catch it. Remember triangles from shop class and math class? You need to have support pieces from the bottom horizontal bed mounts to the diagonal pieces coming down from there the horn mounts.
And be prepared to get pulled over or have your horns stolen.
Kris
I agree about the bracing.
Would you permanently leave the horn mounted up there? Or just the occasional weekend / event?
Nothing sounds better than a high mounted horn up in clean air.
If I was ever going to make one removable, I would make a single pole that fits into a base in the bed. Just an idea…
Spare tire. Don’t advertise what you have. It will get stolen or will get way too much attention from LE.
Thanks for the replys and I agree on the extra attention, but come on, I bet those babys sound sweet on top. Mine are in the spare time area right now. As for stealing it, I’m going to use security bolts and weld them in place. Here’s my second idea:
What material are you thinking of using?
Looks like sqaure tube, but what size and wall thickness?
You still might need a gusset running the other direction - front to rear.
Maybe not.
If you had a heavy enough pipe welded to a big plate, you could say ga-bye to the gussets. Just bolt it to the bed floor with big plate washers under the bed.
man ur truck changed pretty fast…
ru gonna have a cover on ur bed or no?
He’ll only get the attention of LE if he is using it like most of the members of this forum
Not a fan of above cab.
Underneath, nice & stealth is the way to go…
under the bed works best. it just looks like some redneck if you mount them above the cab. might as well run some “stacks” on there as well
Having horns above your car/truck is NOT illegal. Using them with responsibility will not get you in trouble. If your driving around blasting them in town and scaring people, expect some negative attention.
Personally I mount my horns on my roof and have not had and trouble with law enforcement in three states (NY NJ PA). They look and sound better and are also safer from road debris.
Keep in mind they will drag pretty hard at highway speeds. Make sure you really mount them good. Another user mentioned the “triangle”.
You might also want to attach bug screens. Horns at 50mph are perfect bug traps. In some cases even birds could get stuck. Sounds strange but I’ve seen plenty of birds stuck in the bells on my trains.
I do my roof mounting with a fully removable mounting plate that leaves no trace when I’m not using them. Leaving them there on a “permanent” fixture can greatly increase their chance of growing legs.
i know you said you didnt want headache racks but if you can get past this razorback style theres no other better mounting place for horn other than this one…maybe get the one without the light cheaper. My brother has a K5LA on his facing forward and the only way they can get stolen is if they steal his truck or break the manifold. they are pretty much mounted permanent to the rack and the rack is permanently mounted to the bed. Loud as they can be and hes had them on there for over 18months with no troubles.
And about the redneck comment…ive been told that having trainhorns mounted on your vehicle is “REDNECK” enough.
Another option for over the Cab mounting
I needed a mount that does not take up space because I use my truck for hauling.
I wanted to quickly add or remove the horn when needed.
So I went with a trailer hitch reciever mounted vertically against the front bed wall.

Ha ha weld a plate to the top of the cab…

i blast mine almost everyday going to work and etc for almost a year now and suprisingley no problems with anyone…yet…
Having stacks is a redneck thing? I had no idea, I thought it was more of a diesel enthusiast thing.
